Cancel Culture to the rescue. Wes and I have gone back and forth about what cancel culture is, or if it’s really even a thing. At lunch, I saw a prime example of it in action. A guy by the name of Tom Carriveau, made a post along the lines of the shooter being a bad shot…should have splattered his brains or some shit. Immediately, the “Let’s Make This Guy Famous” responses go out. The guy is in Michigan, and apparently owns a boat rental business, and worked for a realty company. Worked, being the key word.
I had to check it out and went to his bookface page. Locked, with one of the comments from the realty company saying as of today, he’s no longer employed. Lots of comments about ruining his boat rental business and him personally.
Now, let me say that if this is fake, because there’s enough fake BS going around to fill the Grand Canyon, then it won’t be the first time I was duped. DOH! If not, here’s why it falls into the cancel culture category. If I suck at my job, and some say I do, my clients can give me a bad review, or bad mouth me to friend and family. There will be some fallout, based on my level of suckage, and I will most likely lose some future business. But, it’s fair. That’s the price of doing business sometimes.
But this is much different. These are people who found what he posted, disgusting, if not disturbing. I happen to agree. So they set out to ruin the guy. Not just as customers, clients or friends of his. The call went out around the country to join in and wipe him out. Pretty easy to do in today’s world of the medias gone social. If I knew the guy, I’d tell him to fuck right off. But for me to get involved from Dothan, Alabama to try and ruin some dude I’d never heard of until today, and never done business with, simply because I didn’t like what he had to say, that’s F’d up. That’s cancel culture.
