On a niche note, Henry Garza.

There are really sooo many that I can’t narrow it down to 5.

Steve Vai
Chuck Berry (Marty McFly)
Randy Rhodes
It goes on and on….

I need to remind the audience here that this one is all SUBJECTIVE - it’s YOUR personal favorites. That’s the fun of it.

And hot damn if Kaos and I aren’t in lockstep on most of these. Actually, Ace is the most redeeming part of KISS to me. I’ve seen him shred pretty well. I dig him.

I think he’s a very cool dude. I’ve never been super crazy about his sound. Admire his ability though.

That’s the thing.  The sound.  It’s the reason I like Ace.  That crazy, bendy, loose, unstructured sound.  I love it. And Gilmour… it’s like his sound buries itself in my soul.

It’s why some others I left off.  Yingwie. Great technically.  But it doesn’t move me.

I’m the same way with Richards and Page. The way he plays those southern rock bluesy riffs is just great. He has great timing with Mick. Dude is probably only doing a few things in reality but he’s making them sound really good.

No particular order:
J. Beck
Prince
Knopfler
C. Santana
Gilmour

Riffs-
Howard Leese
EVH

Most all borrowed from the old blues guitarists. I never got into big venue anthem rock and for pure listening it was the studio greats that gave us our best songs over the many decades.

Might I suggest a spinoff of the actual guitar work?  Pick one or two and post a video.

Maybe with a rule that there can be no dupe entries?

Ah...here come 5 pages of arguing about the merits of John Mayer.

I kid!  Great topic. In no particular order:

Prince (ok...this one might be in the correct position) - I'm on record with my opinions of Prince.  The motherfucking GOAT.
SRV - the absolute soul that drips out of that man's fingers is transcendent (nerd alert: knowing that he's pushing .013s makes what he does WAY more impressive).
Jimi - Innovator.  Was working on what he called "electric sky church" music when he passed.  Really fucking wish he'd have stuck around a few more decades.
Gilmour - Iconic tone and phrasing.  There's a reason that DSOTM has sold about 4trillion copies and he's half the reason at least.
Mike Campbell - Just perfect at finding the riff/phrase/lick to complement what Tom was conveying.  So many songs and nary a fucking miss among them.

Honorable Mentions:
Les Paul - legend
Roy Clark - criminally underrated outside his core fanbase
EVH - Jimi's spiritual descendant and a transformer...the technicality of it just isn't always my thing.
Knopfler - another iconic tone and style.  made rock 'n roll finger picking cool...or at least he stole it from...
Buckingham - Another Campbell-type, with the perfect part that doesn't dominate the song, but elevates it.
Morello - iconoclastic.  I love that shit and his super percussive riffs are SO MUCH FUN TO PLAY!
Adam Jones - Maybe more a product of the band as a whole, but I think this guy writes interesting solos and transitional pieces.  Bonus points for being the animator behind the Sober video (and most of them, I think) with the meat-tube.
Dimebag - Love his play, but not much of a fan of Anselmo so I don't revisit this stuff much.
Beck - Jeff, not Hansen.  Singular style and just making it look so fucking easy.
Marc Ford - really wish he'd stuck with the Crowes, but SHMC rocks so goddamned hard with him he makes my list.
Your appreciation of Mike Campbell makes me hate your guts, less. He is one of my favs. I don’t get into the best type of debates, since it’s so subjective. And that’s why I think GH said no wrong answers but Campbell and Bloomfield are two great Mikes.

Know him personally so well that I met him one time at a party also attended by Tommy Tuberville and Cliff Harris. We dignitaries were at a party before a company went defunct. They had great parties in the 80s and 90s. Apparently there was more cash going out than coming in. I’ve battled this complicated issue most of my business life.

In going back to look at this, I apologize for the last post. That’s some Snag’s level name dropping and uncalled for.

The difference is that my story is actually true and not some made up, senile delusion as a result of a hyper pro and narcissistic personality with early onset dementia.

I don't know if Campbell is a "great" but im with you and Wes - he is one of my personal favorites. Totally forgot him as well. Gave Tom Petty much of his sound.

I was interested in seeing your list but no mention of Steven Hamner tells me that you have no idea what you are talking about.

Real question because I LOVE the band. But is anyone a fan of Neal Schon? (his PPV wedding disaster aside years ago)

Love a lot of his licks in their tunes. Of course Steve Perry is a ton of Journey's legacy but Schon contributed a lot of their "sound" as well.

Yeah.  100%.  My only qualification is that he's inconsistent.  I can listen to the absolute WORST KISS song, but Ace's part is still strong.  There's some great work of his buried in some really juvenile, otherwise cringeworthy songs that languish unheard by most.

I could be wrong, but my perception of Schon was that he did some great things on certain songs, but just kind of wandered through others with uninspired licks.
