The HBO documentary, Running With Our Eyes Closed, is fan-fucking-tastic.  Sam Jones (who did the amazing I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, documenting Wilco's YHF recording and distribution farce) gets some deeply personal footage and you get some context for a lot of his lyrical work.  Great studio and archival concert footage (especially the DBT stuff) is icing on the cake.

If you're a fan (of Isbell or just music and songwriting) you'll dig the shit out of this.

Note: practically zero politics are addressed, it's much more personal than that.

Solid songwriting, as expected, with his influences a bit more apparent than usual.  I heard some pretty straight-forward references to Petty, Duane Allman, all of CSN&Y, some Santana.  Shit, there's even an explicit reference to Son Volt.

Just prepare yourself for all the sentient bama bangs to scream "Vestavia Hills" at the next show.

This is why Ive always taken a pass on this dude. For every decent song he writes or sings, he has about 3-4 that are self loathing. He and Sturgill Simpson are 2 miserable sons of bitches. They, however, may fit right into the new political paradigm of Nashville Country Music.

I’m eternally grateful that not only have I never heard anything these people sing (loose interpretation, perhaps?), but I have never heard OF them.  Would not recognize them if they shit on my porch. 

Funny story.  I know this one pathetically single woman at the gym who was gifted a cardboard cutout of some cowboy hat wearing douche for her birthday.   I assume she jiggles the piggle to it and night but whatever. I assumed it was one of these new country posers.  Turns out it is some guy, Rip Torn maybe?, from some tv show.
