Racial slur, threat against Obama at UA
Posted by Jay Reeves -- Associated Press November 16, 2008 11:47 AM

TUSCALOOSA -- Marsha L. Houston, a professor at the University of Alabama, was so happy Barack Obama won the presidency that she put up a poster of the soon-to-be first family on her office door after the election.

First, someone ripped down the poster. When she put up another, someone scrawled a racial slur on it along with a death threat against the first African-American to win the White House.

"It seems the election brought the racist rats out of the woodwork," Houston, who is black, said in an interview Thursday.

The slur and threat that defaced Houston's poster was but one of a string of racist taunts and menacing on U.S. campuses in the wake of Obama's historic victory, which apparently pulled the hood off old-fashioned hate.

Juicycampus.com, a Web site where students from some 500 schools nationwide post comments anonymously, is littered with hundreds of racist rants and death threats toward Obama, whom exit polls showed was favored by young voters by a 2-1 margin over Republican John McCain.

Nancy Riffe, a faculty member at Alabama, was so incensed that she posted a message on the site chastising university students.

"I think that what we're seeing is an escalation of this sort of thing since the election," Riffe said in an interview. "Instead of hiding behind white hoods, they're hiding behind the Internet."

Officials at Alabama said the university police referred the racist vandalism to federal agents.

Roy Sexton, the agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service in Birmingham, said the agency couldn't comment on any investigation.

"We're obviously concerned with anything that might pose a threat," he said.

Houston, who refers to herself as an "unreconstructed '60s revolutionary," said she was hardly surprised by what happened at Alabama, where then-Gov. George C. Wallace made his infamous "stand in the schoolhouse door" against racial integration in 1963.

The student body and faculty members are mostly conservative, she said, and racist incidents seem to occur every year or so. Before the election, a student was disciplined for defacing copies of the student newspaper that featured a front-page story on an Obama rally on campus.

"The main thing I'd like to see reinforced from this is that this is not the kind of climate we want in our college or university," said Houston, a communications professor. "We do not want the University of Alabama, with its history, to be seen as being like this."

A university administrator said any student found responsible for the vandalism could face a reprimand or suspension.

"That is not behavior we expect of our students or behavior we condone," said Nelson, vice president of student affairs. Nelson was one of two administrators who sent a university-wide e-mail discouraging similar acts.

Many campuses haven't been caught up in the wave of racism. At Georgia State University in Atlanta, Celia Willis of the campus Democratic club said she's only seen support for Obama since the election.

"I have seen some negative reactions behind closed doors from friends and family members but for the most part they say, 'This is my president now, I'll support him,'" said Willis.

At the University of Florida, campus Democratic leader Zach Moller said he hasn't heard of any racist reaction to the election.

Emily Wasyluka, a junior at Alabama, said she hasn't heard any overt racism about Obama in class or walking around campus. But digital communication seems to bring out the worst in people, she said.

"I've gotten some racist text messages ... from friends who were upset over him winning. I was like, 'Whoa, where is that coming from?" said Wasyluka, of Hoover.

First off, the definition of "racist" today seems to be anything that is negative about the ONE.

Second, why is it that every black person in America now needs to make sure everyone knows their homeboy is going to the big house. Race is a bigger issue to the blacks than it is to most everyone else. Sure there will be those that are truly racist, but now for the next four years, we will hear at least one story a day like this.

In the end, we will be reminded by blacks that a black man was voted in, not just a man. Prepare for 4 years of being a racist if you do not totally agree with the ONE.

...

Well HAL-LE-LU-JAH!  That is the best truism that I've heard since The Obama became President Select!  And I'm quite sure that this professor, like tens-of-thousands of other African-Americans, probably voted for The Obama because he's black.

As a codicil to my personal account on election day (see thread "So there I was...") I witnessed several African-Americans who were obviously just there to vote for The Obama and nothing else; I say obvious because the ballot in my county was too long for some of the people that I witnessed voting to be actually voting ON the other elected postions not to mention the ballot issues.

I guess that I'm racist for making that observation!

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

As a codicil to my personal account on election day (see thread "So there I was...") I witnessed several African-Americans who were obviously just there to vote for The Obama and nothing else;

I over heard a similar comment from an African American male in his late 20s at the polling place. It was something to the effect of, "Yeah, this is the first time I've ever voted!". And the response from the other "Democrat" he was speaking with was something to the effect of, "That is great! Civic pride, patrotism, freedom, civic duty.......blah, blah".

While overhearing these comments, it immediately came to my mind, "WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN FOR THE PAST 10 PLUS YEARS ON ELECTION DAY? So know you have a canidate you want to support, that gives you a reason to come out and vote? That is not civic pride or freedom or civic duty, coming out to vote when you fucking feel like it. So, basically you saying, 'Ah fuck all the previous elections, I was either too fucking lazy or too fucking too stupid to come out and vote, but today it's different because of Obama' ".
You can call me right wing or racist or ignorant scum, but in my opinion somebody who shows up to vote when they haven't ever voted in the past because they just haven't fucking cared to for whatever reason, has ZERO civic duty and have no reason to feel proud about voting.
And we will see how many African Americans vote in the next presidental election if there isn't an African American candidate.....That will be the ultimate proof of the reverse racisim in the voting records of Afican Americans. But, HEY THIS IS AMERICA, you can vote any fucking way you want to!

So I'm not the only one who noticed the so-called civic pride on election day.

Well, take heart JohnDeere, with all of the newly registered voters at least our respective counties have some new folk to call on for Jury Duty besides us now...maybe I shouldn't make that observation though; it might be considered racist.
