So a new era in college athletics started at midnight.  Already, Bo Nix and Shaun Shivers have announced sponsorship deals with Milo's and yokegaming respectively.  In scanning the bookfaces last night, I saw a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth, saying this would be the apocalypse for college sports.  My reaction was finally they've abolished the ridiculous and archaic rule of not allowing student athletes to earn an income while playing sports.  Up until today, if the starting long snapper wanted to moon light at Mellow Mushroom to make a little extra cash bussing tables, he was SOL.  As part of the Supreme Court's opinion, Justice Kavanaugh said the NCAA has been doing what no other enterprise in America would be allowed to do, and they're not above the law.(para.)

The NCAA has always held that something like this taking place would threaten the spirit of amateurism. That it would be open season on impermissible benefits being funneled to players.  News flash.  That ship sailed decades ago.  If you ever get a chance to see ESPN's documentary on Marcus Dupree, a stud RB from way back in the 80's, it will blow your mind.  Does anyone think Logan Young brown bagging $150K for an overweight D-lineman from Memphis was an isolated event?  Puhlease!!!  Did Auburn pay the purported $180K to get Cam?  You betcher ass we paid something for him.  Best money we ever spent. As long as they keep score and there are billions flowing through the sport, it will always go on in some fashion.

Things will change.  We're going to quickly start hearing about deals and sponsorships that will make some of these young men and women pretty damn well off.  So what's wrong with that?  Only a tiny percentage of student athletes will actually make a living playing a sport after college, so why shouldn't they be able to cash in on their hard work now?  What is college for anyway?

I don't think this ruins college athletics.  It will somewhat change the landscape and how we perceive it.  The bigger threat right now is the transfer portal and the way that's turned college athletics into open free agency.  The opening of Pandora's Box will be revenue sharing, which IMO will kill all college athletics.  But that's another story for another time.

What say you?

Seriously. If the Chem Eng. major can get a Co-Op making $25 an hour to build his or her brand while in school, I don't care if Sheila C's wants to slide a few bucks to the starting DE to appear on a billboard for their brand of greaseburger. Let the market control the values.

Not true.  The only schools (like OU) that got in trouble for stuff like this were providing no-show jobs at booster businesses.  Your star player "washes cars" down at the dealership...but he never shows up.

If the job is legit and the pay is equal to a non-athlete's pay, then there is no presumption that they are trading on their NIL.

At least, that's how I remember it.

I always thought you couldn't work, but now that you mention it, I recall when a friend of mine who was a really good round ball player...for a white guy....told me a cool story, bro.  It involved a basketball player, whose name rhymes with Priss Corter, a very rich guy whose name rhymes with Rimmy Janes....and a paycheck.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

If you were a football player on scholarship, you weren’t allowed to get a job.
That has changed a lot over the years and admittedly hard to keep up with. I know in the 90's they could to an extent - there were limits on hours and amounts. I remember when I lived in Auburn then, the Lizard worked up at some Nursery/Landscape place off Glenn Ave. But I do remember hearing from people before that time that it was more strict then thus the rampant amount of "paying". The NCAA has bylaws concerning it but I know each School sets the policy withn those bylaws - ie. NCAA may say you CAN, but Auburn or the SEC or Harsin may say you CANT.

Of course, the below is before NIL two days ago:

Quote
The following NCAA Bylaws govern compensation received through employment, including private lessons.

12.4.1 Criteria Governing Compensation to Student-Athletes.
Compensation may be paid to a student-athlete:
  a. Only for work actually performed; and
  b. At a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services.

12.4.1.1 Athletics Reputation.
Such compensation may not include any remuneration for value or utility that the student-athlete may have for the employer because of the publicity, reputation, fame or personal following that he or she has obtained because of athletics ability.

12.4.2.1 Fee-for-Lesson Instruction.
A student-athlete may receive compensation for teaching or coaching sport skills  or techniques in his or her sport on a fee-for-lesson basis, provided:
  a. Institutional facilities are not used;
  b. Playing lessons shall not be permitted;
  c. The institution obtains and keeps on file documentation of the recipient of the lesson(s) and the fee for the lesson(s) provided during any time of the year; and
  d. The compensation is paid by the lesson recipient (or the recipient's family) and not another individual or entity.
  e. Instruction to each individual is comparable to the instruction that would be provided during a private lesson when the instruction involves more than one individual at a time.
  f. The student-athlete does not use his or her name, picture or appearance to promote or advertise the availability of fee-for-lesson sessions.

Employment rules and regulations are the same for both the regular academic year and the summer semester.  Essentially, a student-athlete may be employed as long as they notify the Compliance Office.  A student-athlete cannot be hired based on their athletic abilities or reputation in any way.

Don't think this is really a good thing.  It will change things, though.

You know that dickhole Saban has already figured out how to make it work in the slimiest, greasiest way possible.

Recruiting pitches will now have to include what sponsorships are available.  Companies will be created for the sole purpose of providing marketing money.

My idea would have been much better.  Share of merchandise marketing revenue, put in a trust.  Players get a cut of every licensed product sold.  Stipend available during time in the program.  The longer they stay in school, the higher the cut.  Access to the full amount on graduation (or 21).  So easy.

Some Tigers using the NIL dealio in an innovative way.  Four players, Smoke Monday, Shaun Shivers, TJ Finley and Owen Pappoe, are putting on two football camps this summer, one in Montgomery and the other in B'ham. Ages 6-14.  I believe the cost is $75.00, so if you get 100 kids out at each one, they could bank $15K.  That's pretty keen, and you're promoting AU football in those areas.
