I'd suggest d.) Give him your car (it's sensible, safe, fuel-efficient, will last a while) then buy your nephew's truck for yourself.

I think option D here is the best way to go.  You get a 4wd truck, and it's the thriftiest option as that car will last him through college.  Expenditures for maintenance, etc., will be at a minimum.  Plus, if you put 15 inches blades on that bad boy and get a 10" Collins Bass Bullet for the trunk, your son will have no problems scoring some poonanny at will.  Believe me when I say this.

Having been through this already with a son, buy something modest $2000. Pay cash. Then only keep liability on it. Liability will still be about $1000 a year, but if you buy something new, then you will need/want full coverage...$2500 a year. It's not the car that gets you, it's the insurance. I think the best vehicle is a 4 cyl 2 door truck. That way he can still have a date but never fills up the truck with passengers that will distract him from the road.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

My daughter turned 16 back in March. She got a nice used car and was told there was an upgrade possible at graduation if she keeps her grades good and all boys at arm's length.

If my dad would have bought me a full size 4wd at 16, instead of the chick magnet Mazda RX-7, there is no telling how many times I would have had to call him or some friends to come pull me out of the mud bog that I was up to my hood in. At least when that happened to me a couple of times as an adult, he couldn't ground me and take my truck away from me.

So I say go with "b".
