Everything about this is wrong.
SEC and then the NCAA say that unless the State of Mississippi changes its flag to suit THEIR moral code, there will be repercussions. No SEC or NCAA sanctioned championship-level events. It's a toothless warning because there haven't been championship-level events in the state of Mississippi in decades and there are likely none on the horizon.
But still. What right do either of these bodies have to make demands like this? If the people of Mississippi vote to fly a flag that has an ocelot sucking the dick of a bald orangutan, that's THEIR business. It's not the business of the NCAA or SEC to impose some arbitrary code of standards on the state.
And now there's some player for Ole Miss or MSU who says he'll refuse to play unless the flag is changed. Well fuck that guy very much. That flag was flying when he signed. If he doesn't like it, he can leave.
Oh, it's easy to demonize symbols of the old south. It's easy to pigeonhole everything about the civil war into the neat little slavery box, but that's not the entirety of the story. The Civil War became about slavery when (and only when) passion for the fight in the North was waning to the point that the North was ready to just let it be. Lincoln and a few media members ginned up the good vs. evil theme to keep people engaged. Slavery wasn't the issue, it was just the leverage.
This is wrong on so many levels. Sure, they've fired up the whole good vs. evil thing again in order to justify erasing history. In the grand scheme of things does it really matter if they take down a statue of Nathan Forrest somewhere? No, but that's not where this ends.
What happens when players at Alabama refuse to play unless they remove the statue of that known racist Bahr Brunt from in front of the stadium? What happens when they refuse to play in stadium named for a racist? Can't have a white guy's name on the stadium. Especially not some racist bastard who worked at Washington and Lee University -- the same place racist devil Robert E. Lee served!!
It's ridiculous to judge people from history by today's (ridiculous) standards.
John Kennedy didn't support gay rights! Kennedy Center must be burned down.
Abraham Lincoln didn't support the transgender population! Destroy the Lincoln Memorial
Somebody needs to put an end to this.
