Fans/No Fans...What Say You?
« on: May 13, 2020, 04:45:49 PM »
I love me some sports.  I imagine most of us do and the past two plus months have been weird without it to say the least.  When I'm home, I watch more TV than I care to admit, especially since our home computer crashed a while back.  At this point, with the exception of a few things, like Game 7 of the NLCS when Francisco Cabrera drove home lightning fast Sid Bream in the bottom of the 9th to go to the Series, I'm completely over watching reruns of the Yankees/Red Sox or "Greatest NFL Games."  Much to my chagrin (I've always wanted to use chagrin in casual conversation, even if used wrongly) I've found myself watching more ridiculous reality shows, like Below Deck Sailing Yacht.  God, that Jenna is such a bitch. And without sports, even with 846 channels, I continually sit there thinking there's really not jack shit to watch. I didn't really miss it at first.  Now, I need my spurtz.

We've all heard the proposals on if and when certain sports start back playing again. Can college football start up without students back on campus?  Will only the Power 5 conferences play?  Is the NBA going to have a playoffs only format? If Cali extends the stay at home order, will any college or pro teams from that state be able to play?  USC opens with Bama.  And will some of these sports try and start back without fans in the stands?

First, I have no idea how you can even think of getting players back on campus for football without the students.  These aren't professionals and they owe the school squat as far as putting themselves at risk, whether the risk is real or not.  And college football without fans???  Are you kidding me?  Well, I take that back.  I've watched many a MAC game on Thursday night and they play without people in the stands.  Come to think of it, I've watched quite a few Miami Marlins games in the same setting.  So I guess it's doable.

Would you watch any sport without the fans?  I guess I would, but honestly, I'd rather things get back to normal before they start up.  I don't want to watch the NBA and hear nothing but sneakers squeaking all over the court.  I don't want every football game to look like the spring game at Georgia Tech.

What say you?

For me it would be like watching the first 2 or 3 weeks of any college football season.  I don't care if it's Southwestern Lutheran Southeast Tech State vs Barry in week 1...I'm watching that bitch.  By week 3, it has to at least be a top 20 matchup or an SEC conference game to get my attention.

Are you underestimating Barry again?  You made that mistake once.

I doubt I will ever watch sports again.

Not shitting on it for those who want to, but I just don't care any more.  I don't miss the Sox or the Braves.  I didn't miss March Madness. I don't miss LeBron or Zion.  I don't care where Gus eats breakfast.  Sad, maybe, but if none of it ever came back it wouldn't impact me at all.

I mean, honestly, the debate over Tumpy Tugonafalafel's NFL worthiness is a microcosm of why I don't -- and don't want to -- care.  In the grand scheme of things, and in the paraphrased immortal words of the biggest bitch that ever slithered on planet earth, what difference does it make?  He's either going to be a greasy shit stain on the league, never rise above medicore and doom the Dolphins to at least five years of mediocrity (my poisition) or he's going to do something else.  At the end of the day is that going to do anything for me or the people I care about?  Nope.  Does he deserve some asinine $30 million contract?  Nope.

Love Cam, but he doesn't "deserve" what he got either.  None of them do. Not the Braves, not the Sox, nobody. Nick, Gus and whoever comes after Gus doesn't deserve seven or eight million a year.  That's asinine.  My little pennies won't make or break them, but they can't have them any more.  I'm not going to buy their clothes, hats, shoes.  I'm not going to their games.  I'm taking ESPN off my TV package.

I've found other things to do.  And I'm happy with that.

I really only miss March Madness honestly.  That is the only thing that truly pissed me off about the whole quarantine thing, sports wise.  Now that the baseball season is going to start in July, I might have reason to watch the Cubs in August too.

The first weekend of March Madness is one of the great times in all of sports, especially with everybody and their grandmother filling out a bracket.  So many people don't even care about college basketball, but give em' a bracket and a $10.00 stake in the office pool....oh yeah.

Reminds me of when VictoryLand opened.  I was living in Montgomery at the time and a few of us went up there to watch the puppies run.  I watched a few races and got a feel for it.  How do you bet....how do you decide on a dog?  Went to the booth and plunked down $5.00 on #9 to win.  They let those pups loose after that rabbit and my heart about jumped out of my chest.  Ruuuuunnnnnn you sumbitch!!!

I went to Greenetrack once early on.

Saw Bear Bryant being hauled out of there so drunk it took two people to drag him down the hallway.  One under each shoulder. His feet were dragging behind him like Bernie on the Weekend.  The only reason I knew he was alive was that he was mumbling incoherently.

Couldn't get away with that now.  Well, Saban could I guess.

Bumpity bump.

A couple of observations and questions.  Here we sit in late June and the normal start for our beloved college foosballz is just weeks away.  I've got this feeling (Down in my plums) that there will be nothing normal about it.  So much up in the air with the Covids and the protests/rioting/looting/killing.  I mentioned in another thread that I'd been reading the preseason mags, which is routine every year for me.  It's almost an escape to read the write ups, heights and weights, starters returning etc.  I want to imagine that things will go on as usual, but unfortunately, I can't see that being the case.

The Cyrus Virus may make it all a moot point and shut everything down.  Our local sports talk show this morning was talking about 3 high schools around the State who just shut down all workouts due to numerous players testing positive. Will they or colleges even be able to play?  Will there be fans in the stands if they do? A limited number of fans?  Would you even risk going?

What's also at play are the social issues, for lack of a better term.  There's a lot of shit going on out there to say the least.  I just read where a soccer club in Tulsa scrapped the national anthem for "This land is your land."  Is that the beginning of the end for that tradition at sporting events?  Don't think for a second that it's not a very real possibility.  Auburn has already formed a couple of committees in knee jerk response to all that's going on.  Yes, I said knee jerk, because they've yelled from the mountain tops about how diverse, equal and inclusive they are, but now it seems they're suddenly "woke" and feel the need to do something.  What, I don't know.  But I imagine taking down monuments, renaming buildings and yes, cutting the national anthem are all on the table for discussion.

Would that mean anything or have any effect on you?  Do you care?  What if players kneel or time is taken out to pay tribute to Black Lives Matter on the Jumbotron XL 3000?  It's a sensitive issue and a very real question.  I'm afraid the proverbial battle lines are being drawn as we speak (type) and I could definitely see big money donors pulling out and walking away.  What about you?  If you were at the game and it happened, would you join in?  Would you shrug it off as a passing phase and say, "Let's play football"?  Would you walk out in disgust?

We love our sports and I don't think it's a stretch to say that for most of us, college football is at the top of the list.  I think I may be a little different in that while it's definitely my #1, I do follow the NBA, MLB and NFL.  But I honestly haven't missed the NBA at all, and I'm pretty much over baseball not happening.  I'm really not sure how I'll feel if they start messing with college football.  I'm all about traditions and if they start injecting all these social issues into it and changing things up, I may just take up kayak fishing and spend my Saturdays doing that.

Thoughts?

Once I looked into what BLM, the organization, not the sentiment, stands for, I would have a hard time with Auburn supporting the organization.

Again, not saying that black lives don't matter, they do, but I will not support an organization that goes against many of my beliefs, as a Catholic, and as an American.

This.
I can't for the life of me understand how people can support this organization and have never even looked at their website to see what their basic tenets are.
There are plenty of good organizations out there for minorities that actually give a shit about minorities.

I will not support #blm. I will not kneel to another man.
I will not kill you if you do not threaten me. That is all I ask from others.

Oh. And yes. If AU goes full #BLM, I'm walking.
I told my wife the other day that as hard as it will be, I will find other things to fill my life. I've invested more than most in AU football. But I cannot for the life of me put that in front of my life and my country.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.

Jar said it well.

there is the statement that black lives matter. And there is “Black Lives Matter”  Our beloved school and coach have now endorsed the latter. So yeah. Fuck them. Amazon may have been the smartest in saying “black lives matter” as a generic statement and not an endorsement across the front page. And not limiting functionality for something I pay for. Ya know - like others did.

I may be alone in this but I’m done.  Done with all of it.

I won’t watch.  I won’t attend.  I will gradually stop wearing the gear as what I currently own ages out.

I don’t enjoy it like I used to.  I can’t support the things they support.

I used to believe in the value of sports in promoting things like teamwork, fair play, how to win, how to lose, how to rein in your own desire/ego for the betterment of the greater good.  Sports as they are now no longer support those goals — at any level.

I wish I could care.  I just don’t.

Uncle Jar hates the brown people.

The more I hear, the more I think it will be a mewt point.  I really don't think the Covids are going to allow the footballs.  All I keep hearing are new, daily record numbers of cases.  I'm actually in the camp of those that feel that's only because there's an ass load more testing going on, so naturally, you're going to see a big spike.  I believe a ton of people have it but it's simply not going to affect the vast majority of young, healthy people.  But that will have no bearing on it.  If the numbers continue to rise, I don't see them playing.
