Gus is a real enigma. I don't really understand the man.
When it comes to playing Alabama, he has no fear. We've beaten them two of the last three years. Nobody's done that (except Clemson maybe?). Two years ago, we flat out whipped their ass from start to finish. This season we traded punch for punch until the end. Everybody else plays Bama like they're afraid. Gus? Could give a shit. Afraid of what?
If THAT guy would coach against LSU and Georgia? We'd be talking about an Auburn dynasty the likes of which has never been seen. But he doesn't. His butt puckers up against both. And he's always got that one derp de derp de doo game against somebody we should beat (Florida, Mississippi State, etc.). I just don't get it.
I understand that at some point early in his Auburn life, the necessity of beating Alabama was drilled into his head. And he's done that better than any other coach in the game, honestly. I just wish the urgency of doing the same to LSU and UGA could be instilled in the same way. It's hard to look at what he's done against Alabama and not have that nagging, frustrating hope that he can or will finally get it all together.
Given the situation he's in (the Bama run, Georgia's pretend ascension) he recruits as well or better than any coach Auburn's ever had. The program is clean, you don't hear about AU players stirring up shit or being bad citizens. The program is, honestly, in as good a shape as it's ever been.
It's a real shame he can't get out of his own way quite enough to tip the scales to the next level. Because I think anyone can see just how close it is. Why can't he take a page from Ed Orgeron's book and hire the BEST people available instead of the people he likes best? LSU is where they are because they have (IMO) the best coaching staff top to bottom in the SEC in a long, long time.
I don't know what happens between now and next season, but Gus has once again done that awful, terrible, wonderful December thing of his. He gave us that glimmer of hope.
