Oh Deer!!!
« on: October 24, 2019, 04:39:39 PM »
So, many years ago when I was into hunting, I was in a tree stand and it was getting dark.  Was just about to unload and climb down when I looked up and saw a buck grazing in front of a pond about 70-80 yards in front of me.  I was in the middle of a big field and out of the corner of my eye, I saw my buddy shine his flashlight as he was headed my way.  The buck saw it too and raised his head.  When he did, I dropped him.  My friend thought I was shooting at him and started hollering at me.  I hollered back that I had just dropped a buck about 100 yards ahead of him and he wasn't dead yet.  So, my buddy hauled ass toward the animal and decided to live out a Tarzan fantasy and finish the kill with his knife.  He jumps on the downed deer and as soon as he did, the buck flipped his dumb ass up in the air.  I came real close to falling off my perch because of uncontrollable laughter.  Maybe I shouldn't have laughed.......  (foxynewz)

A hunter in Arkansas died after a deer he shot turned the tables — and reportedly attacked him.
Thomas Alexander, 66, is believed to have been killed as he was hunting in Yellville, an area roughly 102 miles east of Fayetteville, on Tuesday at about 6:30 p.m., officials said.

Alexander shot the buck using a muzzleloader, Keith Stephens, a spokesperson for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, told Fox News.
"He apparently went over to the buck and it got up and attacked him," Stephens said.

The 66-year-old was able to call his wife, and he was transported to the hospital after 8 p.m. He was going to be air-lifted to the hospital, but Alexander stopped breathing on the way to the helicopter, so he was driven there in an ambulance.

Alexander was pronounced dead at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Stephens said. It wasn't clear whether Alexander died from the deer attack, or due to other medical problems, like a heart attack, but hospital officials said he did have puncture wounds when he was admitted. The spokesperson said he doesn't believe an autopsy will be conducted to find out how the hunter died.

Stephens told KY3 that about four years ago there was a similar incident, during which "somebody was struck by a buck's antlers" — but survived.
He said hunters should make sure to wait 30 minutes after shooting a deer before approaching it, as "it may not be dead." Stephens said Alexander "may have done that, [but] we just don’t know."

Yeah.....anyone who immediately gets down after a shot is an idiot.  Give it 15 minutes minimum.  You will either wind up having some weird shit like your buddy getting flipped up or you have to trail it further because you jumped it when it's adrenaline was pumping.  It's amazing how tough they are and how far they can make it after being shot.

I love how on the hunting shows, the guy is sitting in his blind or stand, he shoots the deer with a 7mm that goes off like a cannon.  The deer drops and he looks at the camera and says:

Great kill shot.  He dropped just beyond that big oak.

But to me there's a significant difference between killing for a trophy and killing to eat.

I like venison.  I also use it to supplement what beef I have in the freezer.  I usually take two a year to pack the freezer with and then I will hunt for antlers. Grocery hunt then Trophy hunt.  When it boils down to it, I really don't care if I shoot one not.  I more enjoy the time in nature than anything else.  It's quite and peaceful.  Get in a stand or shooting house, pull out a good book, glance up every few pages and enjoy.  Same for fishing, hiking or camping.  I just want to be outside and I want to more every year that passes by.  I love working IT, but being cooped up and sitting on your ass all day gets old as hell.

This is where that ancient "LIKE" button would be used.

And no, GH, ground beef is not better in chili. Too much fat.

Seriously though, if you are trained to eat fatty beef, then your taste buds will crave it. We eat a lot of venison, therefore, it is enjoyable to us. I cannot stand lamb, but many people like it.

I have two t-bones in the fridge to grill this weekend. I cannot get venison to taste like a good t-bone.
I did grill a couple of deer steaks the day of the Oregon game. You have to marinate well and cook med rare. They were tasty, but no t-bone.

Yes, yes, yes.  Too many people overcook wild meat.  Med rare is the way to go.  I'll even accept med, but med rare is where it's at. I would rather have a ribeye or porterhouse, but venison steak is just fine with me.  I dont' mind ground beef either, but if I am making chili or spaghetti sauce I use venison as much as possible.

I always get the processor to cut up stew meat.  I take that and put it on marinade right before bed.  I use red wine vinegar, Worcestershire, lime juice, red pepper, salt and pepper.  When I get up I throw it in the crockpot with some brown gravy and onions.  Let it cook all day.  It is delicious.  Probably my favorite thing other than the tenderloin medallions.

Nice combination on the marinade.  Is that specific to venison for you or do you use it on other meats?
