I watched a goodly portion of the LSU - Texas game.
When Ed Orgeron was hired as head coach at LSU I pointed and laughed. The guy was essentially unintelligible. He had sucked cheesy balls at Ole Miss.
I was wrong. I think he learned from the awful and exuberant mistakes he made at Ole Miss. I think he learned from the mistakes he watched Lane Kiffin make at Tennessee and USC. I think he learned from the mistakes he watched Les Miles make in his final few years at LSU.
I'm sitting there watching a man who identified his own weaknesses. He identified his team's weaknesses. He brought in people who were loyal to him, but he also searched outside the program to find the best guys to eliminate those weaknesses and he lets them do their thing.
He reached out to his contacts in the NFL and found a guy to elevate the passing game. Looked at the Saints, recognized that Drew Brees isn't necessarily the most gifted guy out there, but his coaches put him in a position to succeed. So he poached a guy who knew that scheme. Paired him with a retread in Ensminger. And they've turned a moderately talented, slow-footed, mediocre-armed Joe Burrow into a potential Heisman candidate.
Maybe Ed O couldn't succeed outside the Bayou. I don't know. He'd definitely be hard to understand.
I compare that to Gus. Who does he hire as offensive coordinators? Rhett Lashlee? Chip Lindsey? Kenny Dillingham? Who are those guys besides young pups who will suck on his man boobs? Did you know Kodi Freaking Burns is co-offensive coordinator? Think about that for a minute. Which of those four would Ed Orgeron have hired?
Orgeron is looking for the best fit for the TEAM. Gus is looking for the best fit for HIM. Sycophants. Yes boys. Who does Gus know in the NFL to ask for guidance or to look for new coaching talent?
I never thought I'd say this but Orgeron is a far better head coach than Gus. And I don't think it's close.
