It isn't defeatist pussy talk it's the reality. I just don't see the wins you see.  I want to be optimistic, I love being optimistic.

However, I'm looking at the reality.  IMO we had a better team last year and finished  7-5 ...8-5 over a mighty Purdue.  QB is the big player in this game, and we have no idea what we have. Including Gus has shown time after time that he can fuck up even the best QB.

I want to be on that train with you, but every time I step on we hit a pothole and I get thrown 50 feet in the air and hurt my ass.

I see guaranteed wins against the 3 nobodies and Ole Miss and Arky.  That get's us to 5.

Assuming losses to FUGA and bammer.  I could possibly agree with you that FUGA is beatable, but I don't see us beating the turds not even at home.  I also think FUGA has the better team than us right now, Jake Fromm from State Farm at the QB position gives them the edge.

That leaves us with Oregon, @ aTm, Miss State, @ Florida and @ LSU - That's a tough slate.

You said 8 wins, are you happy at that number?  What makes you giddy?  I think I would be surprised if we got 8 this year, but it doesn't move my pecker.  Like I said it all depends on what those wins and losses look like.  We get 8 wins and look to be a team making strides through the year, maybe I'm ok.  Yet Gus has never shown that in his entire tenure save for 2013.

I like your attitude, I love your optimism, I just don't see the signs.
I'm in agreement here.  First, I've never really put much stock in the theory that Gus has to have a "Pre-trained" QB to succeed.  I've always thought why wouldn't you bring in a QB with prior experience?  But the fact is, he's never done shit with a QB recruited out of H.S. and we're sitting here with 2 battling it our for the starting job who are exactly that.  I'm not saying Gatewood or Nix will fail by any means, but until I see one of them look like anything other than 3 day old road kill in a real game, my pecker ain't budging either.

Also, there's nothing that gives pause for chub with our running backs.  I like Boobies.  I think he showed some real potential last year.  But right now, it's still just potential that so far seems injury prone.  Kam Martin?  Meh.  Shivers?  Really? And before last season, Gus had the brilliant foresight to let a Running Backs Coach go that had had a 1,000 yard rusher for a bazillionteen years running.

To finish off the Debbie Downer take, our O-line was putrid last year.  Granted, they are all back, all seniors and played a little better down the stretch.  They will definitely be better...but how much can you improve from putrid?

I can see a scenario where Gus goes full 2013, moves back to that straight up, RPO offense, going HUNH and Gatewood kicks ass in that role.  I honestly think that's our one chance to navigate this schedule to 8-9 wins.  But that's about as positive as I can be right now given Gus' history.

Let me throw out another scenario...let's say we get to 9 wins.  (doubtful, but a respecatable number of wins right?!?)

what if the 3 losses were to fueax LSU, FUGA and bama?

Is anyone excited about that?

BTW that would put Gus at 2-5 against fueax LSU, 2-6 against FUGA, and 2-5 against bama,

Hell 10 wins but with trouncings by FUGA and bammer.   Maybe a trouncing by bammer would be excepted given what they are, but FUGA ...ugh.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Lose to Ellis Hugh, FUGA and Bammer again and his ass needs to be out the door before they even start practice for the Poulan Weedeater KFC Summer's Eve Bowl in scenic Bassfield, Mississippi.

Is it better if 2 of the 3 losses are to miss state and Oregon? The other one being Bama. Then it’s a disappointing unexpected loss. Is that better than one you expected to a better team? I’m not sure. I remember losing to ark inexplicably during the tubs reign. And ga tech. But we beat Bama most of the time. I’m just not sure which is worse. Pick your poison.

Let's put it another way as well if we were to lose to feaux LSU  that would put Gus 0-3 against Yawyaw.  That fucking says a lot!

Yawyaw Football - Salary: 3.5 million / Buyout: 6 million
Gustafson Malzahn - Salary: 6.8 million / Buyout: 27 million

Seems legit!  By the way that goes to all the naysayers out there that say, what are you going to get that's better than Malzahn, I say apparently there is a lot. SMH

That was the argument I was countering back when they gave him the extension.  Now granted, this was at a time when coaching searches at a lot of big schools were wrapping up and a ton of coaches were off the market.  But my take was simple.  Yes, you had two big time wins against our two biggest rivals who were #1 at the time. Great accomplishment.  So here's a nice bonus check. Go buy you a beach house or some toys.  He had, I believe, 3 years left on a $5+ mil a year deal and other than those two wins, he hadn't done shit since 2013. I guarantee that any half decent mid major coach can go 7-6...8-5 at Auburn.  Hell, I could for that matter. If you want to pass on a big bonus and $5 million to coach here, then take yo' country ass to Arkansas and tell them how bright the future is there.

But Auburn did what Auburn does.  They let a little euphoria cloud their judgment and cause them to make bone-fucking-headed decisions.

I don't disagree with most of this if the analysis happens in a vacuum, but the buyout + market salary + next buyout when new guy doesn't beat Saban = Auburn insolvency.

I wouldn't have stroked the check/contract for Gus's extension, but I for damned sure wouldn't have been shopping when 3-4 other SEC teams (plus some other conference "heavyweights") were throwing money around to a VERY limited group of qualified names.

Weather the storm...we'll pay less to Gus for the same results (with a dash of hope for brighter days) than we would to pay Gus and his successor(s) until the eventual fall in Ttown.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I guess ultimately, I wanted Gus to make the decision for us. He had just finished off two unbelievable wins against our 2 hated rivals. And knocked them both off their lofty perches at the time.  He deserved a pat on the back and little sumpn' sumpn' to take to the bank.  But not one of the most lucrative, ridiculously one-sided contracts in college football.  I don't know what swayed the PTB more, the 2 euphoric wins or the fact that Arkansas was punking us again?

But Auburn did what Auburn does.  They let a little euphoria cloud their judgment and cause them to make bone-fucking-headed decisions.
I had the same euphoria.

Let's be honest.  To end that season, Auburn played some of the best football we'd seen in years.  It wasn't dipsy doodle, it wasn't trickeration.  That team lined up man-to-man and punished two of the best teams in the country.  Gus was -- other than Dabo -- the only coach in the nation that had proven he could man up against Saban and beat him without it being a fluke.  (Even the 2013 miracle wouldn't have been a miracle if that team hadn't taken his best shot and kept things even).  Yes, he butt-puckered in the SEC Championship because he couldn't ride Kerryon into the dirt and didn't have an alternate plan.  That should have been a huge red flag, but we all ignored it.  Because we thought he'd un-gussed himself.

He'd proven to be a decent recruiter.  Everybody.  Every-b.o.d.y thought he'd finally pulled his head from his ass and figured out how to manage his team's strengths.  Then he and his agent went to the Tommy Tuberville playbook and threatened a move to Arkansas.  At that point in time they believed we were in the best position to derail the Saban express and upend the Kirby cart by sticking with where we were.

The mistake we made was not in resigning him, necessarily, but by committing to that asinine buyout structure.  That's got to be a two-way street and it's not.
