So we signed 21 players yesterday. Last year we inked 23. The first question that stands out is why are we signing less than the allowed amount of players each year? I've never argued with the quality of athletes Malzahn and company have been bringing in. The targeting of needs and development of players has been an issue but overall, if you're consistently in or near the top 10, you've got all the athletes you need to win championships.
But the numbers befuzzle me. Most teams had that many guys sign in the early period. It's not like we shouldn't have room. Off the top of my head, I can recall Asa Martin, Nate Craig-Myers, JayVaughn Myers and John Broussard transferring out. Others? Rock Thomas? My understanding is you can sign up to 25 players a year so if that's the case, there's 6 schollies left on the table. Am I missing something? Besides hair and nuttz?
On a positive note, last year's class and who all we have returning has me sporting chub over our secondary. We are going to be as experienced, deep and athletic as anybody in the country IMO. Not only are starters and contributors like Javaris Davis, Jeremiah Dinson, Daniel Thomas, Noah Igbonerbean and Jordyn Peters back, but last year's class gave us guys that were in the rotation all year like Smoke Monday, Christian Tutt and Jamien Sherwood. And with the 4 game redshirt rule, there were several others that got a good bit of PT as well.
