Its why those lists need requirements or guidelines - time together, popularity, album sales, top 40 charting, trailblazing, live performances etc etc. some kind of criteria.
Honestly if you go total body of work. All of the requirements above - you have to go stones. They’ve got the longevity, albums, concerts, versatility and some pioneering mixed in. Are they my favorite? Probably not but I totally respect their total body of work. More so than the Beatles. John, Paul and the boys will always have the strength of being pioneers and big impact but their lack of longevity and lackluster live performances will always hurt the most in these debates.
This is where and why you can't deny my boys.
Time together: KISS since 1973 (and don't give me the crap about only the original four because every other band out there including AC/DC and Stones even has different members at different times)
Popularity: Up and down, but for a five year stretch there was no band more popular. When they did the re-makeup tour in 96 millions showed up. Final tour is selling well. After nearly 50 years people still want to see it.
Album sales: More gold records than any American band in history.
Top 40: I'm sorry, what?
Trailblazing: Don't even get me started. There are so many bands that wouldn't exist without the trails KISS blazed. Just look at the bands that got their touring starts as the opening act for KISS. Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, Scorpions, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Guns N Roses, Anthrax, Alice in Chains, Bon Jovi, Rage Against the Machine, Slaughter.
Live Performance: There is none better. They created the spectacle and still do it better than any band ever has. If you haven't gone to a KISS show you really can't understand. The albums are the albums, but the music comes alive in a way that can never be conveyed on vinyl (or tape or disc or digitally) when you see the band live. You can't hate KISS until you've seen them in they way they're meant to be experienced.
I'm fully aware there are better musicians, better singles, better whatever. I know it's cool to look down your nose and dismiss their history. But as bands go? Near the top of the list by any qualification.
