Is Malzahn a good coach?
« on: November 14, 2018, 09:42:51 AM »
There's a lot of discussion about Malzahn out there.  Obviously not by Leath or Greene who think they've got our man of the future, but among everyone else who cares about Auburn football, that discussion continues.

Most of what I see written about Malzahn carries the disclaimer "He's a good coach" always with the "but" directly after.

I've reached the conclusion (several times, actually), however, that he is NOT a good coach.  He has had some success, true, but from a pure coaching standpoint he simply isn't a good college football coach.  I used to think he'd be good somewhere like Akron or Bowling Green or South Alabama, but I don't even believe that any more.  All the things that derail him at Auburn are magnified, yes, but even at a small school those same personality flaws would deny him long-term success.

We've hashed and rehashed this and the horse is dead so I'm not going to bother listing all the reasons he isn't a good coach.  I just vote no.

I think he would be ok at a smaller school whose expectations are not terribly high. Place like Akron or eastern Michigan or ark state where 8-4,7-5,6-6 is ok. In that regard I think he’d be ok there. You’re right in that I don’t think he would have long term double digit win seasons. Just like lightning in a bottle in 2013, he may have that occasional season. But in reality he’s a 6-9 win coach , with 7-8 being the probability.

I'll also tell you one other thing that comes from the deepest part of my rage core, the place I try to keep buried, that internal pit where snarling dogs with red eyes and smoke pouring from their nostrils are chained....

If that motherfucker says one more time that "we're gonna get better, I promise you that.."  or "we're gonna get this thing turned around..."  or  "I feel real good about our future..."

Fuck him.

I think he's a good coach.

I'm not sure he's a good head coach.

I'm positive he's not a good SEC head coach.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Let's see, the 5* QB that's digressed big time in less than 2 seasons, will most likely be gone.  You have one sort of legit RB on the roster and no more on the way.  The O-line is the worst in memory and you can't even name the back ups...and no studs on the way. The top receiver in Auburn history, as far as number of catches, is gone. Your defensive front 7 will lose Dontavious Russell, Deshaun Davis, Darrell Williams and Andrew Williams to graduation and most likely Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson to early departure. Maybe even Coe because I think he's been out of H.S. for 3 years.  (Could be wrong) And your DB's just aren't all that good.

And next year, you'll get this thing turned around?

No. Gus runs a clean program but from all indications so does John L. Smith at Kentucky State.

Malzahn is 6-12 overall versus main rivals UGA, UA and LSU and 0-9 on the road.

*About to be 6-13/0-10 which is long past being unacceptable.
