Baby please don't go
« on: November 16, 2018, 03:01:05 PM »
That's the tune al.com is singing to Stidham.

https://www.al.com/auburnfootball/2018/11/for-auburns-jarrett-stidham-the-choice-to-stay-or-go-is-clear.html

Let me make this absolutely clear. If the people surrounding Stidham are advising him to leave Auburn and turn pro, then Stidham needs to surround himself with different people. This marriage between Stidham and Malzahn doesn’t have to end in divorce, and Stidham should know by now that life doesn’t always go the way you plan it.

There is a feeling among Auburn fans that the Tigers would be better next year without Stidham. With whom? Just like in 2017, Stidham’s ability as a passer next season would give the Tigers the best chance of beating Georgia and Alabama.

I'm kind of torn.  Sitting on a fence.  47/65 on him leaving.

Is he ready for the NFL?  My totally untrained, armchair QB self says I don't think so.  Too many stupid decisions and holds the ball too long.  That's what I see.

But, I also know the NFL scouts, experts etc. don't give a damn about what I think and/or what a player does in college.  (For the most part) See SEC sack leader from 2017, Jeff Holland. They get these guys in and measure everything they can do physically.  They interview them and put em' through their paces and grade them like cattle.  If they have the mental and physical tools to play, they can teach them the way the position SHOULD be played.  They could look at Stidham and think that if Malzahn hasn't fucked him up too bad, he may be the steal of the draft.

Unless they don't.

As for him coming back, if we don't get Kelly Bryant, I'd damn sure prefer JS over what we have now or any incoming true freshman.  Although, none of it matters if the O-line doesn't drastically improve by next year.

I say we live or die with Joe Burrow by God.

We need Stidham IMO however we need help on the offensive line moreso than anything beyond a new head coach.
Secondly, Steele needs someone like a  Jeff Holland to provide a sack/hurrying effect on passing downs rather than using several at a time or bringing the house.
Got no problem with Bryant coming or Stidham moving on but a true freshman shouldn't be thrown to the wolves without a QB coach, a mentor ahead of him and improvements made on the offensive line.

Auburn 53, Liberty 0.

So the sexual fantasy of losing to Liberty succumbs to No Nut November.

Had a great time on The Planes today.  Hung at Joe's tailgate most of the day.  Obviously with the season we've had and Liberty in town, it was low key.  But Joe cooked like it was the Iron Bowl.  Huge vat of Brunswick Stew, about 20 half chickens, a full ham, brats and kraut, sausage etc.  But the one thing he put on the grill/smoker was 2 whole bologna loafs.  Sweet Haysus...like buttah.  Coated in yellow mustard and pepper.  Complete char on the outside.  I think GH2001 ate 2 pounds of it.  But he's entitled.  Dude ran a 26.2 mile marathon this morning. (Finished 3rd overall)

Game was enjoyable.  Liberty is not on our level. They have a quick hitting, high scoring offense. We made immediate adjustments and shut em' down after the first drive.  Their QB was 1 for 19 after the first drive.  Didn't complete another pass until the 4th quarter.  I don't care if you're playing air.  That's impressive.  Obviously rested Boobs.  Kam ran good and got 100+. Seth Williams is legit.  Huge, fast and strong.

On a Stidham note...I sure wish I knew what the overall problem is.  Indecision?  Line play?  Bad routes?  I'm not smart enough to know.  But, suffice it to say, that I've never seen a QB throw a prettier pass.  Perfect, tight spiral and normally accurate.  Looked great today.  I know many of you have mixed feelings.  I hope he's back next year.  I like the guy.

On another note.  The offense was pretty innovative today.  Good mix of run and pass and the play actions were definitely different than what we've seen.  I have to give credit in that at least they are giving Bama some things to think about.  Decent play calling.

Offense once again looked like shit the first quarter. Play like that against a real team and the game is likely over quick.

2nd quarter same ole shit. Took a 4th and 1 at goal to score a TD. Against Liberty. Stidham overthrows 81 wide open...AGAIN!

If not for pick six and Carlson finally hitting some long FGs, it would be an ugly first half.

Thank goodness Stidham double clutched on the TD throw to 18 in the. 3rd. Otherwise I think he would have overthrown that one too. Monster catch on the other end of that one!
Running game looked a bit better since we just overpowered them. Shivers has a great second gear, but I think he needs to use it from the get go.
4:47 in the third and the Asa Martin question has been answered. He will not redshirt. He looks good.

4th belonged to defense. Just wore them out.
Tolbert finally got some carries. I wonder why he never got any before? He seems pretty smooth.
Willis will never be the starting AU QB.

We won this game as we should have. But play that first half next week, and the joke will be brutal!

Watching Stidham and this line, I do not share Snags’ optimism!

Since snags summed it up and I see no pre iron bowl week thread....

1. I really thought it would have been a closer game due to who Liberty had beaten this season. Oh well that’s matchup logic for you. It’s not an exact science. Stidham is Gus. He good under perfect conditions when he can follow the script. Anything gets away from that they are both toast. I’m not sure if I want him to stay or go. If him going means Bryant comes in and starts going all nick Marshall on that ass - by all means please leave. Otherwise we are left with Willis and a true freshman Nix.

B. Bama is banged up. What does this mean? Probably nothing. Tua didn’t appear to be hobbling. But Harris is hurt and so are two other great players. Again, not sure how much it means unless tua is hurt next week.

III. The catch rule. I hate it. I’m no fan of the rebel black shark bears. But I hate hate hate that rule. It’s stupid. It was Calvin Johnson and dez Bryant all over again last night. Brown has ball. Possession. Two feet touch in end zone. Over. Right? Nope. Apparently IF YOU decide to fall to the ground the ball has to be maintained fully until you ass or hip completes its fall. That sounds like some broward county recount bullshit. It needs to be examined in the off-season. I don’t care what the nfl does. It’s a bullshit rule.

Quattro. Arkansas has regressed again. Getting punked by moo state for 52? Sheesh. Same for Tenn. Locke is a good qb. Mizzous MO under Odom seems to be to get better as the season progresses. Yeah glad we don’t have em. They look good right now on O.

The Five. This ain’t a pretty season by any means. It ain’t what we wanted. I won’t rehash the gus sucks stuff. There isn’t anything to say that hasn’t been already 18 times. Where are where we are. We will go to a bowl and get extra practice. I know, a shitty bowl most likely. But bowling buys you recruiting and practice. Even when shitty. Gus isn’t going anywhere at least for a year. So what do we do in the meantime to mitigate? Replace entire offensive staff? Start grooming Nix the min he steps on campus? Gus isn’t the long term solution we all agree there. But until he is gone it’s important to Keep the program afloat and not tanked to the bottom like 2012. Seth Williams is legit. The D looked much better. Time of possession was a huge positive (which helps the previous point). There was an emotion to the team and Gus I haven’t seen since the Washington game. Where has that been??

Jarrett Stidham is our AJ McCarron. Minus the chest tattoo. And his girlfriend is hotter. And I think his family has more money. I don't know what AJ's pulling down for being a clip board holder in the NFL though.

I'm happy for a win but it sure would be nice to see the fastest decoy in football (10.07 100 meters) catch a forward pass running vertically.

Would also like to see the second fastest man on the field (10.47) catch a couple of swing passes to compliment his five or six carries.

The entire offense would benefit by throwing the ball to the speedsters.

I like Stidham ok. We lose a couple more last year without his accuracy. He's much better when we are able to run it and seems to fall under the tag of system QB.

We hardly miss a beat with a stronger offensive line and the poor play calling is not as evident when we can run it effectively.

I hang it squarely on coaching.

Every game I say to myself, "Put flash out wide. if a guy comes within 7 yards of him, automatic go route!"
And every game I see running short routes while slower guys go long?

And Shivers really needs the swing passes. He does not seem to show full speed until he sees open field.
But alas, we are saving their speed for a special day...
