One of the most notorious gangsters of all time, Whitey Bulger was beaten to death at the age of 89 on his first day in a West Virginia prison.
Freddy Geas a low-level soldier from West Springfield Mass who was incarcerated in the same WV facility most likely coordinated and led the fatal attack on Whitey. Supposedly it was as simple as putting down a rat in Geas' mind.
I've read a lot of books about gangsters from Sal Giancana to Al Capone to Albert Anastasia to Gotti to Henry Hill to the Gambinos, etc. Whitey's story was always of extreme interest to me because of where and who he was. And how his choices led to such a completely different (in public) life than that of his brother.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't have some small respect for his ruthlessness and will. As sad as it sounds, there are times I wish I was more like Whitey just in terms of not taking even the smallest iota of shit from anybody.
Ignominious end to a history that was made legendary by his long escape from justice.
