JGTate has opined that a loss to Ole Miss will end Malzahn's era before Monday.

Not sure what I think about that.

We'll be the laughing stock of college football...no...all of sports if that happens.  Not saying it isn't needed. You know I wanted him gone 2 years ago.  But if Gus is canned mid season after beating 2 #1's and getting that phat contract.....wow!  AU will be the poster child for dysfunction.

But, I'd take that chance.

Laughing stock to many but paying that much off also has to make others sit up and take notice. Yes it's incredibly stupid to get in that position but just how many programs can or would write the check?
If it happens, it's the ultimate display of both stupidity and power.
Whoops we made a huge error.
There...we corrected it!

Leath may be the sacrificial lamb here. Apparently this was ALL him. Sexton bent his ass over and went in dry. As much as I hated Jacobs, he had no part in this deal and was blocked out of the negotiations since he was lame duck.

I admit I thought Jacobs was much of the issue with Malzahn. He wasn’t. Gus just stinks. Jay only gets fault for hiring the sumbitch.

Jason Kirk, SB Nation and Shutdown Fullcast, weighs in and what he posts goes against what GF says about Auburn's fire-happy nature:

Quote
On Nov. 25, 2012, Auburn fired a head coach who’d recently contributed to a national championship. The school replaced Gene Chizik with Gus Malzahn, the OC of
2010’s BCS champ. Malzahn soon led a run within seconds of 2013’s national title as well.

In 2003, with Tommy Tuberville coming off a top-15 season (and a year before 13-0), the school met with Bobby Petrino about Tuberville’s job.

In 1998, a year after Terry Bowden had gone 10-3 and just a few after he’d gone 11-0, he was pushed to resign amid a losing streak.

At Auburn, tomorrow is never promised, no matter what you’ve done in the past and how much money it would take to get rid of you.

https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2018/10/18/17993672/gus-malzahn-auburn-hot-seat-contract
Gus Malzahn really might be coaching for his job, big buyout and all

Auburn looks likely to finish a top-10 season right around .500. Again.

I agree with you that it had a lot to do with this dumbest of asses decision.  All I'm saying is, if you don't think JJ had his hand in this, you're smoking crack.  Period.

Lame ducks don’t typically get much say in long term decisions. In all walks of life. Ie obama and Merrick Garland. From what I’ve seen, he was purposely omitted from any worthwhile meetings by the same ones who shoved him out the door.

Bingo.  And as I posted in some other thread or universe, the average tenure for a college coach at the D1 level is 3.8 years.

Now have we made bonehead decisions - yes/absofuckinglutely we made hires we shouldn't have or paid extensions we most definitely shouldn't have.

But these folks that want to run their mouths about getting rid of Terry Bowden after going undefeated, about getting rid of Gene Chizik after winning a MNC even Tommy Tubs.

Forget their fucking History.

Terry Bowden won with Dye's recruits and then systematically tried to recruit 130 lb tailbacks.  Bowden was a great in-game coach but couldn't recruit for shit.  Also there was that little thing called fucking around on his wife with an employee.  JUSTIFIED FIRING and for the record, Terry was given the option to finish the season and then be fired, he opted to walk out mid-season.

Chizik was a mistake to begin with but whatever.  His discipline was defense (and much like our current coach) we showed no signs of improvement in the defense arena.  When he was fired we had something like 35 players leave the program including one getting killed, we had multiple locker room issues.  JUSTIFIED FIRING. There is a reason he is no longer a Head Coach anywhere.

Tommy Tubs - Now what they did to Tubs was pretty sinister but at the time our team was regressing.  His was the only one I would argue was pretty dirty, but like Snags said many programs do this we just got caught.  Still he wasn't fired at that point so I don't really count that as a firing and when he was let go, he admitted himself it was time to move on.

So not only is it a myth - sb nation quality, surprise - but auburn the last 30 years is top 3 in conference with uga and mizzou in coaching longevity on avg.

I've got an FSU buddy that I've argued this point with for years.  He always brings the same, old, tired argument that he went undefeated and when he lost a few games, y'all kicked him to the curb.  Which actually would be pretty cruel because he's too short to climb up on it.  If you weren't a fan of the program and didn't follow what went on, you didn't see that he took everything he did for those two years, wadded it up and threw it in the trash.  Started over running his diddy's offense and trying to recruit the next Warrick Dunn at RB.  BTW, put a 225 lb. running back named Fred Beasley on the bench in lieu of said 130 lb. RB's.  Beasley had a nice NFL career.
