Richardson coming home
« on: August 19, 2018, 11:18:07 AM »
After record setting stints in the NFL and CFL the great Trent Richardson is likely coming home to anchor the Birmingham franchise of the Alliance of American Football.

https://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2018/08/saskatchewan_roughriders_relea.html

University of Alabama alumni with housesitting needs should contact the Richardson family immediately. In expectation of increased business opportunities, Birmingham area Enterprise Rental locations are adding additional staff.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I like how that one former Bama clown with the Ravens said he was gonna be better this season because he “was getting back on that Alabama stuff” and al.com splooged over ‘the process’ as opposed to what he really meant.

My favorite part of the story though is how they make it sound that getting cut by a CANADIAN football team is really better because now he will be able to play closer to home.  I love it when a plan comes together!

Games start Saturday.

Two games at 7 (CBS carrying one, I think) and then two more games on Sunday.

Anyone watch the initial game?  My regional broadcast was the ATL/ORL game.

I thought the product on the field was quality football.  Certainly better than arena ball and XFL (in its previous iteration...the quality of the new version is tbd) and about on par with NFL Europe.

Some familiar names and faces on the field, but the star power is on the sidelines and in the front offices.  I didn't realize Bill Polian was co-founder of the league...that's instant credibility.  It's always fun to watch Spurrier coach (even though he is getting old as fuck and it's unsettling to see him at less than 100%) but this league is emphasizing transparency, so you get bonus SOS with lots of audio during the game.

In the spirit of transparency, you also get to listen in as the officials review plays (quickly and without all the foot dragging that the NFL and CFB engage in.)

I think the biggest problem they have (based on my one game experience) is getting the broadcast booth to quit acting surprised at the product's quality.  I understand Gary Danielson was there to lend some football credibility and won't likely be a full-time broadcaster, but the league needs everyone with a microphone to drop phrases like "good enough" or "better than expected."  That's a fine line, I suppose (spontaneous response from the booth vs scripted corporate jargon), but you still want the product "sold" by people that believe in it.

TL/DR: was pretty good and I'll probably watch the B'ham game today.  3pm.

Today's game is on the CBS Sports Network...which, for some reason, isn't part of my CBS All Access subscription.

So, I'm forced to watch this one on my laptop.

That's sub-optimal and will affect my future viewership.

The B'ham squad looks to be pretty salty.  The defense was smothering and the QB has a nice rapport with his receiving corps.

I was enjoying watching Richardson flail about and take loss after loss...until ultimately the Memphis defense got tired and he punched the rock in twice.

I'm adopting the Chad strategy he's employing with Ingram in NO.

I can't support it.

al.com ruins it for me.  Went there to see a little about the game.  Almost every photo in their game gallery is of T-Rent.

No thanks.

Oh, don't be such a puss.  Just watch it.  I cannot stomach arena league, XFL, etc, so I was a little weary of AAF. However, I really enjoyed the product on the field this weekend.  As Chizad mentioned, it was pretty cool to get the bonus content of hearing the replay booth conversation, players, etc.  I went into it thinking this would be a one-off and the AAF wouldn't make it a second year, but I think they're going to make it.  There seems to be a lot of fan support judging by attendance.

I’ve seen enough “inspiring” Richardson stories to last me a lifetime.  When he fails here, as he likely will, then I’ll give it a shot.  Until then?  Better things to do.
