WASHINGTON - Sen. Jeff Sessions said he'll vote against the $700 billion bailout of the financial industry tonight because it was cobbled together too quickly without enough public input and leaves too many questions unanswered.

 
"The Secretary of the Treasury came to Congress with his plan, he threatened us that if we don't pass it there will be dire consequences, and pretty much, with some retrenchment of his ideas, he's gotten what he wanted," the Alabama Republican said in an interview today at the Capitol.

Even changes to the bill that was defeated Monday in the U.S. House were not enough to win Sessions' support.

"(Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson Jr.) hasn't explained precisely what factors he will use in deciding who he will buy the poisoned assets from and who he won't," said Sessions.

Sessions said he believed the threat of an economic crisis is legitimate, but that the Bush administration's plan is too "Wall Street-centric."

Also Wednesday afternoon, the phones were ringing nonstop in the office of Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala. Both senators' offices say calls from constituents are overwhelmingly urging them to vote against the legislation.

Shelby, the top Republican on the Senate banking committee, did not participate in negotiations on the bailout and has called Paulson's proposal "fundamentally flawed." He will also vote "no" tonight.

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, a Republican and former member of Congress, said he would have voted for it.

"Congress exists for one reason and one reason only, and that's to help us," Riley said in Montgomery. "That's why anybody should be in public service, to help the people out there that are paying the bills every day, who are getting up and going to work every day."

Riley said there is pain the housing market and small businesses don't have enough access to credit.

"When you hear of businesses now that are closing daily, then I think everybody recognizes that something has got to change and change relatively quickly," he said.

This disappoints me in Riley.  Well no crap gov, that is why they are called public servants!

I don't know what the answer is to all this, but I know that I am mad as hell about having to bailout someone else mistakes with my money.  A part of me is confused and knows that something needs to be done about this , but the Conservative/Libertarian in me does not want the Federal Government sticking their nose in this, especially since they were the ones that screwed it up in the first place.

Anyone head on how Bud Cramer will vote when this bill comes up in the House?  If I am not mistaken I just saw on the news a few minutes ago that this passed the senate 70 something to 20 something.

Cramer voted for the first bailout bill last week. Their is no reason for him not to support the bailout with another 100 billion of pork tacked onto the back page. SEC. 503. EXEMPTION FROM EXCISE TAX FOR CERTAIN WOODEN ARROWS DESIGNED FOR USE BY CHILDREN.

Per President Bush and every Democrat with a mouth, we are facing the worse economic crisis since the Great Depression and they tack shit like SEC 503. on probably the most important piece of legislation to move through Congress in at least four years.

I don't know about you all, but I'm really FUCKING concerned about some FUCKING toy arrows while the government piddles away 800 billion dollars. I'm no longer confused on this issue; I'm mad as hell. And you should be too.



If the racist term is elected, we won't have to worry about socialized healthcare. The U.S. government is about to be so broke; they'll be lucky to afford to buy envelopes and stamps for Congressmen in 2009.
