AMHERST — UMass offensive lineman Jack Driscoll, who started 20 games at over his first two seasons, has elected to transfer.
Driscoll, a native of Madison, Conn., redshirted the 2015 season. He started eight games as a redshirt freshman in 2016 and all 12 in 2017. He graduated in three years but wasn’t accepted into the graduate program at UMass he hoped to attend and will head elsewhere.
He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining and will be eligible immediately.
Whipple was frustrated that Driscoll, who had earned an under graduate degree in three years, wasn’t accepted to UMass grad school.
“It’s disappointing,” he said. “He couldn’t get into business school. The school let him go. It’s very frustrating. We’ll just move on.”

Larnell Coleman will likely take over at right tackle, although Jake Largay could also fill slide over to the spot.
“We’ll regroup,” Whipple said. “We have a lot of guys who have played.”
Driscoll was named to Phil Steele’s All-Independent first team.

Yes. He can play most of the positions on the line and he's eligible to play immediately.

I don't know if they're so much doing this out of some great need.  Too early to tell right now.  Anytime you can take a guy with that much experience and you have the extra scholarship to do it, you pull the trigger.  We took a transfer in Austin Golson several years ago.  Took Casey Dunn and Wilson Bell last year.  Now you have a tackle with 2 years starting experience and 2 years of eligibility left.  No brainer for any team.  Like Bell, he may not even be good enough to start.

We've got a bunch of talented, highly rated kids across the O-line.  We're just going through one of those cycles where we graduated a bunch of starters.

Calling it Auburn University kind of goes against the grain.

I'm not sure what to think. he started at UMAss. How is that any different than taking a Troy transfer? I hope he is another sleeper like Dunn. But who gets that lucky twice?

Agreed.  I like the fact that he has a good bit of experience starting at the D-1 level, but that's no guarantee he can handle SEC defensive linemen.  But, at the very worst, he should add quality depth.

Not sure the guy from Rice we missed on could handle SEC d-linemen either. But as Buboblooski et al. said...we need bodies.
