I would say that this is exactly how it was for 99.9 % of the fan base.
There were very few of us knowledgeable enough about football to be able to forecast that he’d be as good as he was.
Granted, even I was unsure of the Heisman outcome. I thought there may be some pushback if the investigation story broke.
