I was reading a preview of the Braves/Phillies opener. They were saying Philly picked up Jake Areola in the off season and wrote that he posted a 3.53 ERA (4.16 FIP) in 168.1 innings for Chicago last season. What's a FIP? As much as I follow biesbol, they've lost me on a lot of these stats. Funny Innings Pitched? Female Innings Pitched? Fucking Innings Pitched? Do we really need to know what the man's FIP is?

FIP: Fielding Independent Pitching converts a pitcher's three true outcomes into an earned run average-like number. The formula is (13*HR+3*(HBP+BB)-2*K)/IP, plus a constant (usually around 3.2) to put it on the same scale as earned run average.

I'd never heard of it either.

Braves come back to win 8-5 with a 3-run homer. Nick Markakis. Like I've been saying from the start, the Braves are a team of destiny. Could win the division. Tons of young, super talented...oh hell. Who am I kidding? We got a win. Happy for it.

75-80 wins may be doable. Was going back and forth with the Buzzer, who attended the opener. Need a report when he gets back home and settled. Had to be pretty cool to attend a home opening win, no matter who it was.

Only opening day Iâ€™ve attended was the last opening day of Busch II, in 2005. President Bush came and threw out the first pitch. Pitching from the mound, he nailed a strike, with Iâ€™m assuming, a bullet proof vest under the Cardinals jacket he was wearing.

Also my daughters first baseball game.

New stadium is very nice. The area around it reminds me of the area around Busch stadium. First class.

Cubbies win again. Cards limp out of NY with a 6-2 loss. Bravos have an out of body experience with a 15-2 win over the Phillies to take the series 2-1. However, the Nationals come to town with a slightly better brand of pitching.
