If they did Irma would be right on the cusp of being one seeing as how the gaps between the other categories range from 14-24 mph. A cat 5 starts at 157 and Irma is 176 mph now. Sustained. Gusts of over 210. This thing is starting to make Harvey look like a warm up - at least in strength and size.

If she gets into the Gulf, like some models are starting to forecast, she's gonna be a freakin monster...she already is, but the warm waters of the Gulf will be like adding Jet fuel and gun powder to the flame.

Nearly all of the weather models have her hitting South Florida and turning North up to the Carolinas. I don't think she'll turn North, I think she'll power through and get into the Gulf. Then she'll meet up with Hurricane Katia. By then Hurricane José will come barreling through. Then you'll have a Super Hurricane...or not...probably not.
