I saw this post on the Book Faces. I'll just say I agree and leave it here.
A group of criminals in North Carolina pulled down a Confederate statue yesterday. They then proceeded to kick the object, which, according to reports, officially ended racism forever.
A statue was also vandalized in Baltimore. There has been no attempt by law enforcement to stop these street gangs from inflicting whatever damage they want to inflict on public property. They're allowed to vandalize, because, well, they're sad and angry and that means the law doesn't apply.
Look, I don't care where you fall on the political spectrum, and I don't care how you feel about the Confederacy, all rational people must agree that this kind of thing can't go on. This is not a sign of a healthy society. Pitchfork mobs aren't permitted to swarm the streets and dismantle whatever monuments they don't like in a civilized country. I guess this is one more indication that we are not that sort of country anymore.
Well, OK then. Can I take this cue and act accordingly? If I see a distasteful statue or monument, can I just go ahead and pull it down? What about that Lenin statue in Seattle? Lenin killed and enslaved far more people than the Confederacy ever did. Can I just go there and take the statue down? San Francisco has a bust of Harvey Milk. Harvey Milk raped teenage boys. Personally, I object to men who rape boys, so I'm just going to fly over to San Fran and take a hammer to that disgusting display. Cool?
In fact, borrowing a point that Rod Dreher made earlier today, can I start demolishing abortion clinics as well? Sure, I'll check to see if anyone is inside first, but if the coast is clear can I light a match and torch the death camp? Abortion clinics are actually an on going threat to human life. A statue has never killed anyone. If statues can be destroyed at will, it seems an infant execution chamber should also be a candidate for demolition-by-mob.
Oh. Wait. That's right. Only mobs fueled by certain pre-approved ideologies are allowed to do whatever they want. The rest of us are still bound by the law. Great. Got it.
The rule of law is dead in America.
