Of all the things I got for Christmas, this is near the top.
The stage show on the Blu Ray is about what you'd expect. Lots of pyro, fireworks, flames, blood, confetti and bombast. It looks really good.
What pushes it over the top for me is the acoustic set that's one of the extras. Shows me that even when all the makeup and explosions are stripped away, they can actually play a little bit. I think that's one of the most overlooked aspects of the band. It's not all just the show.
The band they are is not what they set out to be. If you look at their history and the bands they cite as influences, they really planned to be more of a pop band along the lines of the Beatles. (Listen to Wicked Lester demos). That changed when they started seeing bands like Alice Cooper and New York Dolls and decided to take a hard right turn and take it to another level. Made them famous. Made them icons. Whether you want to accept it or not, they influenced and gave so many other bands their starts. Legends who don't get the due they're due.
Yeah, they're old now. Yeah, it's Tommy and Eric instead of Ace and Peter. But in fairness Tommy and Eric have been with the band as long or longer than the originals, so I don't begrudge that at all.
Gene's 67. Jeez. I hope I'm able to do half what he does when I'm that old.
