We Need A QB
« on: December 08, 2016, 03:27:04 PM »
Thanks, Captain Obvious.

No disrespect to Sean White.  And I'd be perfectly fine if I knew he'd stay healthy along with a healthy stable of running backs.  Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case the last two years.  But, what worries me most is what's up and coming around this league.  The SEC was as down overall this year as any in maybe the last 10.  It was Bama and a huge drop off to who?  Us? Florida?  But something tells me that's all about to change in a hurry.  Is Bama going to come back to the pack?  I doubt it.  But will the rest of the league raise its game to close the gap?  Yep, it's coming!  And you don't have to look any farther than the QB position to see why.

There was a lot of young talent that either progressed nicely as the season went on, or some guys that got their chance late in the season and gave notice to the league that they're going to have to be dealt with.  Several of those are on traditional bottom dwellers or middle of the road at best teams.

Kyle Shurmer at Vanderbilt got better and better as the season went on.  6'4" 230.  Not eye popping stats by any means.  Threw for over 2,200 yards with 9 TD's and 7 Int's. The key there is learning to protect the guy.  He was sacked 27 times.  Keep him upright and play the same D as they did this year and Vandy is suddenly someone you don't look forward to playing anymore. Only a sophomore.

Jake Bentley at USCe got his playing time in the last few games of the season.  The 6'3" freshman threw for over 1,000 with 6/2.  From Opelika BTW.

Stephen Johnson and Kentucky turned it on late.  He threw for 12 TD's and 6 Int's and can hurt you with the run.

What about Nick Fitzgerald at MSU? 6'5" 230 sophomore.  21 TD's through the air and 10 Int's.  And unless I was looking at the wrong stats, the guy rushed for over 1,200 yards.  Yeesh!

Then there are guys like Shea Patterson at Ole Miss.  They took the redshirt off of him and let him start the last 3 games.  Also had him throw it a minimum of 42 times in all 3 games.  6 TD's and 3 Int's.

Is Danny Etling the man at LSU?  I thought he played well in spots but I believe he'll be a senior this upcoming year.

The one that scares me the most is Jacob Eason.  6'5" freshman that started virtually the entire season.  Stats weren't anything to write home about either and he was very erratic at times.  But now, he's been there, done that and he's only going to get better and better.

Of course, Bama has the POY in Hurts, who is only a freshman.  The bottom line is this league is about to be inundated with damn fine quarterbacks throughout.  I would love to think we were part of that arms race, but I don't see it right now.  Had we taken the redshirt off Barrett and he showed real promise...or if we get a commit from Stidham, I'd like our chances.  But, I really don't want to head into next season banking on SW staying healthy for us to contend.

We thought we were fucked without Robinson until big Pettway showed-out. Obviously we can win with a healthy White but getting Stidham will only raise his game, and I like our chances with the RS as the understudy.

All we lack then are playmaking receivers...

and some decent coaching Forgot about that.

Coaching was the one and only reason for the losses to Clemson and Georgia.  No excuses!  Malzahn went full tard.  Possibly A&M but our D couldn't keep them off the field enough.  No chance regardless against Bama without a QB or healthy RB. (Even though Malzahn added a dash of tard to that one too.)

As I've said about CGM's offense several times, it begins and ends with the ability to run, run, run.  If he can do that, we can whip anyone with Chris Todd, Cam Newton or Sean White.  I'm just not sold on Sean's ability to complete a season with all his parts in tact.

Yes Cap'n. It should now be very obvious that we need an option QB that can throw it to get beyond the better teams and to advance.

I believe that's why Auburn is going after Jarrett Stidman. Sean White is okay, he's a game manager. Stidman is supposedly a game changer. If he comes to Auburn, don't be surprised if he's the better QB, that we likely won't see until the 3rd or 4th game of the season. Best players on the field...pssssshhhhhhh.

I think Stidman starts right away personally and yes, I do think he commits to Auburn next week. Matter of fact, something tells me that there is a great possibility Kendal Briles is hired as the AU QB coach if Briles doesn't receive a job elsewhere.

If Stidham does sign and he's really all that and a bag of Wavy Lays, I'd feel real good about he and Sean/Woody being #1 and #2.  Need to get Barrett some reps and see what he's got.

Oh yeah, forgot about Woody. So, QB carrot sale until the 2nd or 3rd game, between those three. Then, between #1 & #2 for the next game or two. Eventually settling on Stidman after Glass Joe Sean White gets broken again. We even practice or is it just "RUN THE NEXT PLAY, RUN IT, RUN IT, RUN IT!!!!!!" type?

Maybe if Gushlee would stop looking for the next Cam Newton, then maybe, just maybe they'll find a really talented QB to be our next leader on offense.

Valid point.  How about taking what you have, making a decision on the starter based on some legit measurables, not waffling so the guy always feels like somebody is lurking over his shoulder, coaching him up, structuring a game plan that plays to his strengths, building a playbook that maximizes his skill set and having a backup plan in case the starter is injured?

Gus is an unqualified failure at developing a quarterback

Gus is an unqualified failure at developing a quarterback

With him being the HC, that shouldn't be his sole responsibility anyway. That should fall on Rhetts shoulders. Gus should however do a way better job on staying with a guy like you said.

I mentioned this in another thread/post somewhere but what about Briles being hired as the QB coach? I mean that is if he isn't hired somewhere else as an OC.

He's good at getting loose for yards or picking up a needed first down but he is a passer first and foremost, not a read option QB along the lines of Nick Marshall.

Love his talent but in truth he will need to coach himself up
to thrive in utter bewilderment.

No to Kendall Briles. Would really like to have him if we had a HC that could realize he is being the same type of meddling shithead that he himself despised as an O.C.

Pettway confirmed that he's coming back.  If Stidham is all he's cracked up to be, next year SHOULD be a record setting year offensively.
