There is blame for the independent candidates Jill Stein and Gary Johnson, both of whom made it clear that Trump was unacceptable, but soldiered on. Their margins could easily have carried Clinton over the top in key states.

Clinton allies will justifiably point to a sequence of an unprecedented external interference. From one-sided Russian hacking and disclosure of their findings on WikiLeaks to FBI Director James Comey's last-minute intervention on emails.

They will blame the media, which gave Trump so much coverage throughout the campaign and chased Clinton's email scandal with what Democrats saw as clear double standard.

And they will blame Republican voter suppression efforts in North Carolina — proven to be coordinated by state party officials — a state that could have tipped the race had its narrow margin been reversed. -- Fuck you, NBC.

Outrage and the Clinton brand could not beat Trump. It's time to reinvent the party.

Hillary Clinton lost, but I failed.

I failed millions of immigrants who’ve been assured they’ll be rounded up. I failed the Muslim Americans, African Americans and other minorities who have been reminded that they’re all suspects in their own homes. I failed the 20 million Americans, many of them previously uninsurable, who may now lose their health coverage, possibly forever.  (1)

I failed above all to imagine that anyone would see Donald Trump as anything but a Macy’s Day Parade float filled with insecurities, greed and gas. (2)

I couldn’t imagine that America would replace the first African-American president with a birther championed by the KKK and Chachi from Happy Days.   (3)

I couldn’t imagine that more than half of white women would chose a beauty pageant nabob accused of being a serial groper over the first woman major-party nominee in American history. (4)

And I couldn’t imagine that the best polling, the best ground game, the best strategists ever assembled would get beaten by a guy who’d mastered little in his life but the art of firing people on TV. (5)

I was so freaked out by Trump and his ability to lie, insult and contradict himself with impunity that I made the same mistake the Clinton campaign seemed to make. I thought outrage would be enough. (6)

Nope. Not compared to Trump — a walking nuclear reactor of white grievance.  (7)

His own insufferable words deployed in ad after ad weren’t enough to destroy him. They might even have helped him with his bigger than life “tells it like it is” shtick that made him feel like the giant Stay Puft Marshmallow Man sent to save his fans from the threat of female Ghostbusters. (8)

He promised his supporters that he was the antidote — or the poison — to the dynastic and incestuous world of Washington, D.C. politics personified by his opponent. And his traveling demolition derby of contempt and threats, with the press trapped in a little pen to be sneered at, proved his point on a daily basis.  (9)

Clinton promised us that she would save us from this maniac while keeping President Obama’s legacy intact. Trump promised his supporters a better life.

He won, even if hundreds of thousands more Americans voted for Clinton.

Now he has to deliver. And Democrats — for the first time in 24 years — must reimagine our party without the Clintons.

This has to start with recognizing the tremendous advantages Republicans have tailored over the past 40 years. They have their own media and their own majority gerrymandered out of a minority of Americans. (10) This gets a special fuck you to this guy.  Republicans have their own media?  Bullshit.  The Democrats own the media with a few exceptions.  Very few.  The "majority" was gerrymandered out of the motherfucking majority.  You know, the 70% of the country that is like me. So fuck you again, you wheezing mommy part clown.

They have a massive infrastructure of well-paid academics, organizers and functionaries. Thus their candidates and their staffs enter office far more prepared to make their power and policies permanent. (11)Also bullshit

Democrats need to replicate what the right as built as we prepare to resist any effort by Trump and the GOP to bash away at the few institutions that still protect the middle class, the climate and the most vulnerable. (12) Also bullshit.  The democrats destroy the middle class and always have.   

We can start by examining Information, Inequality, and Mass Polarization: Ideology in Advanced Democracies by political scientists Torben Iversen and David Soskice, as Lee Drutman did last year.  (13) Fucking socialist

Did Trump voters know they were voting to give the rich trillions in tax breaks at a time when income inequality is near all-time highs? Did they know they were voting to roll back the Wall Street reforms designed to prevent the sort of crash we saw in 2008, which killed far more jobs than any trade deal ever could? Did they have any idea if Trump would sign House Speaker Paul Ryan’s plan to turn Medicare into a privatized system that resembles Obamacare? (15) Wrong.

How could they?

The left and the media were so focused on the instability of Trump’s personality, and the psychodrama of his relationship with Ryan, that the reality of his proposals was rarely conveyed. America just voted to repeal most of 80 years of progress, and they didn't even know that was on the ballot. (15) Bullshit.  The only progress is what Reagan provided.  And to a lesser degree Bush.  Clinton's policies led to the collapse of 2008 and the death of the small town.  Fucking idiot. 

For me, this failure of imagination was possible because I’d never accepted history’s oft-repeated lesson: This nation resists change the way Trump repels fact checkers. (16)

Reconstruction led to the Redemption and the rise of Jim Crow. Civil rights led to the conservative revolution. And eight years filled with radical advancements for LGBT people, clean energy and the uninsured has given us Donald Trump.

Van Jones calls it “whitelash,” but we can’t ignore how Democrats failed to inspire millions of minorities and millennials who showed up in 2012 and stayed home this week.

But this is just the past doing what the past always does — haunting those who expect the future to take care of itself.

(CNN)There is only one silver lining in yesterday's election results, which will allow a con man, a pathological liar, a bold racist and a sexual predator to succeed the first African-American president.Pathetic

We can now launch a difficult but urgent mission — shaking the Democratic Party down to its foundation, ejecting the failed Bill/Hillary Clinton economic and global worldview and standing up for a set of populist, sound economic and foreign policy principles that could earn majority support.

On the surface, it's astounding that a man who ripped off thousands of people who worked for him became the champion of the regular Joe. But, as Bernie Sanders reiterated in a recent podcast with me, the problem is that people have ceased to see a difference between the parties, particularly on economic issues. I'll briefly cite a few examples.Ridiculous hyperbole

Starting out with NAFTA, Bill Clinton forced "free trade" upon the party. I warned multiple times during the election that Trump would make inroads with voters in the Rust Belt unless Democrats made a clean break from corporate trade deals. Around the globe, these deals are a key tool to drive down wages, exploit workers and prosecute global class warfare. But, the current president still serves up the malarkey about the benefits of these deals. Right for once

Bill Clinton's broader economic agenda was even more corrosive. During Clinton's so-called "good economy," the decline of organized labor continued. The president, and his secretary of labor, Robert Reich, did very little to arrest the decline. Yes, there was a decline, but it wasn't because of "organized labor."  Unions are one of the things that broke the rust belt.  They outlived their usefulness years ago.

No Democratic president was more focused on letting business interests off the leash. He gave more power to media companies, triggering consolidation and a powerful wave of concentration of the media into a few hands. The average person, not steeped in policy, understood this every time he or she opened their skyrocketing cable bills.

Hand-in-glove with Wall Street, Clinton got rid of the Glass Steagall Act, which removed the separation between commercial banks, insurers and investment banks, allowing the self-dealing manipulation of mortgages and interest rates and accelerating the shifting of huge wealth into the hands of a few. Right again]


Again, the average person, just trying to make ends meet, eventually got the sharpest end of that spear when millions of people lost their homes, jobs and retirement in the thundering collapse known as the Great Recession, which, for many, has been a depression. Right again

There is so much more: A planet dying because for years fossil fuel interests were coddled. Welfare reform. Mass incarceration of people of color, which had both racial and economic consequences. The praise of the Clinton years, and red-faced defense by its leader, was always couched in contrast to the Reagan and two Bush Administrations. Great. Yep

Feeding off the Clinton machine, the Democratic Party has become riddled with lobbyists, billionaires, and hustlers who pocket huge sums of money by running either nonprofit "think tanks" or election-cycle networks, and politicians who, indeed, are focused mostly on reelection. Surrounding the party are extremely well-paid non-profit leaders, who end up defending the status quo. True

The big donations streaming from anti-union powerhouses like Wal-Mart or big financial entities like Bank of America not only whitewashed the policies of interests directly opposed to what the Democratic Party should stand for, but they also clouded the deeper systemic crisis within the party. We can only address climate change, poverty and global inequality by axing the very system benefiting many of the donors to the Clinton Foundation. Partially right, but draws the wrong conclusion

Fast forward to the 2016 election. There is no doubt in my mind that Bernie Sanders would have defeated Trump. His authenticity would have pierced through Trump's fraudulent appeal. His concise, point-by-point evisceration of a failed economic model and aggressive, blundering foreign policy was entirely understandable to voters.Seen this repeated numerous times.  Bernie Sanders would still be picking up his teeth today.  Trump would have eviscerated him.  He's a motherfucking socialist, for God's sake.  This country -- save a few loons like this idiot -- isn't that stupid or forgetful.

As one of Sen. Sanders' national surrogates, I went to dozens of his rallies. At each one, he took to the stage, a big sheaf of papers in his hands, and, treating people as adults not just backdrops for TV ads, he conducted a seminar on America and the globe. People are quite familiar with Sanders' economic agenda, including higher taxes on the wealthy, expanding Social Security and a single-payer Medicare for All system. All of which were sound economically, not to mention morally urgent. Wrong.  A billion times wrong

How Hillary Clinton lost
What was often given short shrift was his broader philosophical willingness to challenge American exceptionalism. Many times, including during two national debates, he pointed out that, while he was proud as a son of immigrants to be an American, this country has supported repressive dictators, sent the CIA on missions to help overthrow democratically elected governments that were not supportive enough of our interests and sent our young men and women to die in immoral wars. And he wasn't afraid to point out that those failed foreign policies have been bedrocks of the Democratic Party for several decades.
Rather than foster a good debate during the primaries, the party, obsessed with the coronation of an anointed candidate, set out to destroy Sanders and his movement.Yawn.

The various email leaks showing broad collusion only confirmed what was patently obvious on the surface: We stood in opposition to a virtual wall of elected Democratic officials, and party functionaries. Proudly so, I might add. No, Trump did that.  Bernie backers are morons.

As a union member, I was particularly saddened to see the labor movement mostly line up in the primaries behind the status quo — a status quo often linked arm-and-arm with corporate interests bent on destroying unions. This guy. Part of the problem, not the solution

Beyond rhetoric, democracy was not valued. Once Sanders effectively conceded the race, he took on full-throated advocacy for Secretary Clinton. To support his position, many of us, including me, agreed to play nice at the convention and beyond, because we felt that Donald Trump was a unique threat to the nation.

Trump's shocking victory: What it means
On the night Tim Kaine spoke to the convention, many Sanders delegates like me wanted to express respectful opposition to President Obama's Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement by holding signs. But, our signs were confiscated, and, when we made some homemade versions on the back of the officially-sanctioned Kaine signs, we were told to cease and desist or our credentials would be revoked. So much for democracy. Yawn.  Vote for Trump or shut up.

More important, that gagging of pretty mild protest was symbolic. The party is not an open place, beyond rhetoric, to a whole swath of activists and voters who want deep, systemic change.

So, now what? Yesterday was indeed devastating. My niece texted me, "what do we do now?" Her desperate question broke my heart. I grew up in a feminist household: My mother was one of a handful of women to break a glass ceiling, going to medical school after she already had her three kids. Fuck your stupid neice.  You should have answered "go to school, get a job, pay taxes." 

I know many young women are mourning the blow of a President Trump partly because of the rejection of a woman as the first president -- which is yet another reason I argue we must remake the Democratic Party.
Fool.  Not rejection of a woman.  Rejection of HER.

First, the Clinton machine must be rooted out of the party. A quarter of a century is enough time to understand that its ideology has failed the American people.Damn skippy

Second, the Democratic National Committee has to be turned inside out. The disgraced and deposed chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, is only the worst symptom of this wider truth. The party has lost hundreds of state legislative seats, Republicans now control two-thirds of state chambers and have a comfortable majority of governorships (who will determine redistricting in 2020). They have a historic margin in the House of Representatives, will continue to run the Senate and, thus, likely put a Trump-stamp on the Supreme Court.Great news

Third, we need to run targeted primary contests broadly and across the board to replace elected officials who don't want to see a more open, vibrant and inclusive party. The Sanders movement has shown we can raise the money to fund challengers — and they are ready, by the thousands, to compete. Wrong.  How about catering to the majority and not pandering to the fringe, fucko?

With these changes, and drawing from the energy of many great activists, a new Democratic Party can be revitalized. The progressive movement, in all its elements — advocates for labor, environmentalists, and civil rights of all stripes — can shape that future.Now there's a nightmare.  We've seen enough shit from advocates for stripes.  Fuck off.
