Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton ranked first among the NFL Network's Top 100 Players of 2016.

NFL players voted for the top 100, and NFL Network revealed the top 10 in its countdown of the list on Wednesday night.


NFL MVP.
Offensive Player of the Year.
A ranking to match the number on his back.

Newton finished ahead of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who became the first player to finish in the top five in all six years of the poll, and last year's No. 1 player, Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt. Brady finished second, and Watt came in third in 2016.

The rest of the top 10 included Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown at No. 4, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson at No. 5, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers at No. 6, Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly at No. 7, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones at No. 8, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski at No. 9 and New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. at No. 10.

Newton earned the NFL Most Valuable Player Award and Offensive Player of the Year Award for the 2015 season, when he led the Panthers to a 15-1 regular-season record and a spot in Super Bowl 50.

Newton received All-Pro recognition for the first time and Pro Bowl selection for the third time in 2015.

Newton completed 296-of-496 passes for 3,837 yards and 35 touchdowns and ran 132 times for 636 yards and 10 TDs last season. He became the first NFL player with five seasons of 3,000 passing yards and 500 rushing yards and the first with at least 30 TD passes and more than seven TD runs in a season. Newton also tied Steve Young's NFL record for games with a touchdown pass and a touchdown run at 31 and matched Tom Brady's record by winning a Player of the Week Award five times during 2015.

Newton won the Heisman Trophy while helping Auburn capture the BCS national championship for the 2010 season.

This is the fifth straight season that Newton has been on the Top 100 Players list, which started in 2011. He ranked 40th in 2012, 46th in 2013, 24th in 2014 and 73rd in 2015.

Oh how the mighty has fallen. Cam is a shell of anything he might have been once upon a time. Shoulder issues. Back issues. And just lack of being able to make anything happen issues. The Panthers offense is “Cam - throw or hand it to McCaffery and let’s see what happens.” It’s abysmal and there’s reason to believe the Panthers will shut him down for the year now that the Playoffs are out of reach. This offseason the team needs to take a long look at the future and I am not sure Cam is the answer. Maybe a change of scenery would do him good. It’s hard to watch him absolutely suck now. I’m sure the Bammers rejoice though. That PED busted troll Mark Ingram sure had a lot to chirp about last night. Piece of shoot Saints. At least the Falcons suck worse.

Not rejoicing here.  I was undefeated in my Fantasy money league and needed Cam to light it up in the first week of our playoffs.  Of course he did absolutely dick last night and I lost.  Also a hearty fuck you to Michael Thomas, Zach Ertz, and Amari Cooper.

The Panthers only TD was on a trick play on 4th and 1 with McCaffery throwing a pass.  Horrible game by both teams and yes, Cam is hard to watch right now. 

Just before half, the Panthers are driving and are right at the Cheatin' Saints' 25.  Cam runs a QB draw for the first down.  As is his custom, he gets up and walks into the defensive secondary so everybody can watch him do his "Look at me, I got a first down" move.  The announcers are asking WTH he's doing since the clock is under 30 seconds and ticking.  The coach calls a time out and gives Cam the same WTH are you doing look as he strolls to the sideline.

Two plays later, he badly underthrows a receiver in the end zone for an interception.

This ain't about love. Will always love Cam for what he gave us. But facts are facts. He was too busy celebrating to line his guys up and try for a score at the end of the half. Then, he fucked up. Badly. And they never recovered.

He's been much improved this season in terms of how he carries himself and how he's handling the losses and injuries.  

Moping, disdainful Cam hasn't really been much in evidence.  

And FWIW, before his shoulder seized up (whatever the injury actually is, nobody will say) he was having his best year statistically.  He was hitting short and long routes.  He was moving the ball and moving the team.  

And then it sorta collapsed.
