"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

It makes too much sense.  First, as Fat Bert alluded to, take the cases out of the equation where returning for another year is not an option, as in academic or family issues.  So you have a group of underclassmen who feel like they're good enough to play on Sundays and make bank. If you allow them to be evaluated and they see they're not all that in the eyes of NFL scouts right now, why not let them return?

They're most likely not going to make it like they thought they were but in addition, the NFL doesn't really want them so why does declaring have to mean all or nothing?  Avery Young did something similar last year, knowing he was coming back.  He didn't declare but he got input from scouts on the things he needed to work on to make it in the show.

I would imagine the biggest reasons for "why not" has to do with agents. It would be hard for a guy to declare for the draft, wait for 3 or 4 months, and not sign with an agent who wants to "help" him get drafted higher.

Like you said, they can already do this.

I don't think it is a good idea to let them go and come back. Either you go pro, or you don't. There is no coming back from that. Every jr. in NCAA would declare for the draft if there were no consequences. How do you handle the combine? How do you handle pro days?

It is a shady pandora's box you are opening.

It could be but maybe not as bad as you think.  Got a question because it's something I've always wondered about. There's wall to wall coverage of these kids from the time they declare until draft day, showing everything they go through to prepare.  Virtually every player is training at some elite facility and/or has hired a trainer for their specific position.  They're living out of State for weeks.  They've got room and board, meals etc.  No doubt the cost is in the thousands.

Are the agents footing that bill in the hope it will help their client's chances in the draft?  Most players, outside of former Bama players, couldn't afford it.

The only thing that makes this question less dumb than the one posed at the Auburn Club, to Gus, is that it couldn't get us on probation.

This, plus how do you as a college coach prepare for such things? What if you have an incoming player that is better? What if you anticipate the guy not getting drafted and he does?

Put a time limit on it.  Don't let the evaluation process go until or anywhere near draft day.  Set up Pro Day type camps where the NFL scouts can see these players perform early on.  Give them their evaluations and set a deadline to either follow through with it or decide to return.

Gonna' be rough.  They've got 3 in La. Tech, Texas State and Alcorn.  But, the other OOC game is TCU and the 2 East games are Florida and at Mizzou.  The rest be the West.

Tough ho to blow.  Wait...tough row to hoe.

Agree. I think it can be done and worked out.

I think it would help a lot of guys out in the long run letting them come back. Better career chance %, prob end up actually getting a degree, Etc

They already get these done. That's what gives them the evaluation to know to come out. The only thing they aren't doing is pro day or combines.

Plus, you can't just take 3 months off winter workouts to go try and see what you can do in the pros and then come back. You are either part of the team or you aren't.

Bert is a fucking dumb ass and is butt hurt because his stupid fucking players didn't get what they wanted. And now he wants them back because he thinks it will make his team better. He could give two shits about them losing millions.

Fuck that. You declare, you are out.

Agreed on Bert.  But why is it allowed in basketball and not football?  They may be getting "evaluations" but I am talking about opportunities to work out for the scouts, not just a grading of film.  You don't have to drag it out.  Once the time passes to declare, you've got one month (or whatever time they set) to make it to Camp A, B, C or D.  Or all of the above.  Once their done and grades are in, you make the final declaration.

As far as being part of the team....please nurra'.  Every one of them have aspirations and dreams of making it to the show.  That's what this is all about for so many of them.  That's the sole reason may of them choose a particular college.  And that's what college is about anyway.  Preparing for and optimizing your opportunities for the future.

So why basketball and not football?

I can see your points but is it not hypocritical having them be total opposites?

Tough ho to blow.  Wait...tough row to hoe.

Let's take a closer look at the Hogs' run in 2016:

Louisiana Tech - WIN Hogs fans will be swolen as Bert's gut with pride. (1-0)

@ TCU - LOSS Pride will f with them and so with Gary Patterson. They get whipped here. (1-1)

Texas State - WIN. Snooze of a game unless Smash Williams goes off for the Bobcats. (2-1)

@ Texas A&M - LOSS. Could be a toss up though. aTm may be a tire fire waiting to ignite. Hard to call. Give home team advantage. (2-2)

Alcorn State - WIN. Justice department files injunction against Arkansas for a hate crime. (3-2)

Alabama - LOSS. 'Bama won't be "all that" this year but they aren't going to job to these schmoes. (3-3)

Ole Miss - LOSS. Bucky Holy Beaver finds a way to get by again. (3-4)

@ Auburn - LOSS. Calling it now. Media will all pick Arkansas and Auburn will make that look stupid. Bert doesn't shake hands afterwards either. (3-5)

OFF - The entire bye week of Arkansas sports radio will be discussion of Bert's buyout and who is on the short list. Jon Gruden will be top choice, of course.

Florida - LOSS. Jim McElwain is a pud in training but he's doing it well in Swampville. Too hard of a road game. (3-6)

LSU - LOSS. Revenge of the Hat. Les ain't going down easy, folks. The heat is at sub-atomic levels under Bert's seat now. (3-7)

@ Mississippi State - LOSS. This is the one where the reactor will go full nuclear and meltdown will occur. He's fired by Monday with the opportunity to coach the last game. (3-8)

@ Missouri - WIN. The only team worse than Mizzou in the East is Vandy but not by much. (4-8)
