And it may benefit Auburn at a position of need next fall.
Former Illinois linebacker T.J. Neal is set to graduate in May and is looking for a landing spot to play immediately in the fall. Auburn might just be that place. He reached out to a friend, Brennan Marion, a former receiver who played under Auburn coach Gus Malzahn at Tulsa in 2007 looking for options.
"I sent my film down there and they said they like it a lot," Neal told AL.com.
Neal said he has talked to Malzahn and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele by phone in recent days.
Neal is coming off a 109-tackle season with the Illini, but left the program when he didn't agree with the new coaching staff's plan to move him from Mike linebacker to Sam.
"It was a smack in the face when the position changed," he said. "I just didn't agree with it."
The 6-foot-1, 235-pound senior plans to visit West Virginia on Monday and Auburn on Feb. 15. Auburn appears to be his favorite at the moment. It's not clear if Auburn has offered a scholarship.
"Being able to play down there in Alabama, it's like a dream come true," Neal said. "From my high school, I never thought I'd play at a big-time school like Auburn. To have a chance now, it's exciting to play against some of the top players in the country."
Williams was a five-star linebacker in the class of 2014 out of St. Paul's Episcopal, ranking as high as No. 2 at his position nationally, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. He'll lead a group of youngsters attempting to step up in Kevin Steele's defense.
The McKeeseport, Pennsylvania native finished his Illinois career with 255 tackles and started in all 25 games during his final two seasons with the Illini. He co-led the team with 15 tackles for loss, including two sacks, in 2015.
Linebacker could prove to be the most difficult unit on the field to replicate production as three former starters -- Kris Frost, Cassanova McKinzy and Justin Garrett -- leave after exhausting their eligibility in 2015. The trio combined for 601 tackles and 76 starts over the last four seasons. The Tigers do have options despite the lack of experience. Tre' Williams took a promsing step forward in 2015 as a sophomore. Jeff Holland played plenty as a freshman and Deshaun Davis has shown promise in practices.
Neal said he plans to enroll in classes and join a team in late May or June. A decision, if offered, could come soon after his visit to Auburn, he said.
"My mind will be made up once I get down there and get around the guys and the coaches," he said.
