SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Cedar Grove (Ga.) coach Jermaine "Jimmy" Smith remembers the first time he saw Antwuan Jackson.
"They told me, 'he's all right,'" Smith said, before Jackson's freshman season.
It took just one practice to figure out that Smith had something special on his hands.
"I saw him for myself and I said, 'I don't know what they saw,'" Smith said. "I saw a lot more. I saw he had the ability to be really, really, really good."
Smith coached Jackson for four years at Cedar Grove High School before his star player recently committed to Auburn. Jackson, a four-star defensive tackle, will get to Auburn on Jan. 10.
Smith will get to coach Jackson somewhat one last time on Saturday in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. The game kicks off at noon from the Alamodome and will be televised by NBC.
Jackson is playing for the East squad and Smith is coaching the East defensive backs.
Jackson became a starter right away for Cedar Grove, playing left tackle and defensive tackle. He emerged as a big-time recruit early on, and got an offer from Georgia after his ninth-grade year. The Georgia defensive line coach was Rodney Garner, who is now at Auburn.
"His father was a Georgia fan," Smith said. "But it looks like he's going to become an Auburn fan."
Garner heavily pursued Jackson before he picked the Tigers over Ohio State and a host of other schools. But Auburn and head coach Gus Malzahn made Jackson a big priority.
"They didn't really sell nothing," Jackson said this week. "They were just being themselves and that's why I really like Auburn.
"Every coach, Gus Malzahn, all the way down to the special teams coach, they all love me there and I talk to them."
Jackson has now grown into a 6-foot-3, 305-pound defensive tackle. His days of playing on both sides of the ball are over.
"He might get bored sometime," Smith said.
Jackson emerged into a solid student, good enough to graduate early. Smith said he was a "2.9 or 3.0 (grade point average) student."
Jackson wants to major in exercise science with goals of being a physical therapist or trainer.
"He's always working hard and always doing his work and helping teammates," Smith said. "He's also very football-smart. He understands what people try to do against him on offense and vice versa."
According to Smith, Auburn is getting the complete package with Jackson.
"He's a great kid, hard worker, humble, respectful and a team player," Smith said. "All the positives you hope you get in a player, you get some of them, but with him you get all of them. That's just the non-football stuff. I'll be sad to see him go."

What's something most people don't know about you? "I love mac and cheese. I could eat mac and cheese every day."
What will you bring to Auburn? "Just great leadership (and the ability to) ball out for my defense and ball out for my team."
Do you see a chance to play early? "It's a great chance, but me, I just need to develop as a player first and it'll come."
