Meet Clarke Smith – offensive lineman at Leeds, pathway creator for three-star running back Tre Nation.
Smith is also a graduating senior and an Auburn-bound long snapper. He will head to the SEC school this fall as a walk-on, aiming to make a contribution to Tigers special teams.
Chris Sailer Kicking ranks him No. 1 in the state of Alabama, and No. 33 nationally as a long snapper. Alabama long snappers Aaron Martin (No. 99), Derek Marion (No. 284) and Sam James Bishop (No. 297) are also ranked nationally. Last season, Ike Powell handled long snapper duties for Auburn.
What a difference four years makes. As a freshman, the 5-7, 189 pound Smith said he earned the long snapper job at Leeds because he was the only guy who could snap the football 14 yards, back to the punter.
"Scrawny little me – because I was smaller than this," Smith – now 6-foot-5, and 250 pounds, said above in the video. "And they were like, 'Well, it's your job and it kind of went from there.' "
He ended his senior season with enough pancake blocks to help Leeds successfully defend its Class 4A state championship.
How as Smith improved at long snapping?
Said Smith: "Speed, accuracy and confidence."
