Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Nominees - for 2016
« on: October 12, 2015, 10:28:39 AM »
This is always a good topic and is a debatable as politics as far as exclusions/omissions, inclusions.

This years nominees are a solid crop although I'm still not sold on all of them. But its still probably the most solid group in a long while.

The Cars
Nine Inch Nails
Steve Miller
Deep Purple
Cheap Trick
NWA
Janet Jackson
Chicago
Yes
Chaka Khan
Spinners
Chic
Los Lobos
The Smiths

My take....

Without a Doubt:
The Cars
Steve Miller
Deep Purple
Cheap Trick
Chicago
Yes

Would lean to 'probably':
NWA - if you have Public Enemy and Run DMC in, you have to include NWA also. Trailblazers in their genre.
Janet Jackson - good career, not exactly RnR but neither is Abba or Madonna
Spinners - solid disco era group with boocoodles of hits to dance to. Other disco groups are in it now.
The Smiths - very influential, esp in the UK.

Prob Not or Too Early:
Chaka Khan - soft no, but close. CK's influence over time seems to grow.
Chic - SOLID no.
Los Lobos - No.
Nine Inch Nails - too soon.

With Chicago, Yes and DP - wtf took so long?

Where is Bon Jovi? The Cure? Moody Blues?

The Cars -  Moderate.  Like electing Claudell Washington to the MLB HoF.  Good player, but really?

Nine Inch Nails  - Catalog isn't big enough to be Hall of Fame material.  Like putting Ickey Woods in the NFL HoF.  Good season or two, but...

Steve Miller - Yeah.

Deep Purple -  Yeah

Cheap Trick - Sure, I guess. HoF should be for bands who made a significant contribution and I don't know if Cheap Trick makes that cut.

NWA - Nope.  Not rock. Like putting Pele in the NFL HoF.

Janet Jackson  - Nope. Not rock. Like putting Sheryl Swoopes in the NBA HoF.

Chicago -  Absolutely.

Yes - Yes.

Chaka Khan - No way, no how.  Not rock. Not even a good singer. Like putting Tyler Watts in the NFL HoF.

Spinners - Not rock.  Like putting Michael Sam in the NBA HoF.

Chic - Not rock. Like putting Rebecca Lobo in the NFL HoF.

Los Lobos - Not rock.  Like giving Cheech Marin the Nobel prize for literature

The Smiths - No thank you.

I personally dont agree with NWA and Janet, but precendents have already been set. Its hard for me to tell em no when Abba has already been let in to wreck the place and eat all the cake. Same with Spinners. Bee Gees are already in and so are a couple of other disco groups. Was probably wrong to let different genres get elected in the first but it is what it is.

And the list you provided of snubs thus far......yes, every single one should be in.

As already mentioned, the precedent has already been set that the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame is not exclusively Rock N' Roll music.

I take much more issue with Donna Summers & Abba being in there than NWA.

Disco was the antithesis of Rock N' Roll.

Fuck the Police is Rock 'N Roll as fuck. Scaring the shit out of every parent whose kids had the record was Rock N' Roll as fuck.

Agreed.  They might as well re-name the place, though.

American Modern Music Hall of Fame?

Pretty much what it is.

Chad is right...if it scared your parents, was rebellious and the kids liked it - it was probably rock n roll by culture, if not musically.

Well.  Then you have to put Gwar, Slipknot and that "disgusting pervert" Rick James in there too.

Those are not in there already??

I keed...but only one of those was really widely popular. The other two had niche audiences

Oh, and its obvious to state, but to get in this place you should also have to be kinda good. I don't think its too much to ask.

Have you seen the list of who's in there?  Needs to be some explanation for about 3/4 of them.  Hall of Fame should mean some significant impact.  Most in there just don't fit that criterion.

I have a faint feeling their political views and leanings have something to do with some entry's.

And the place should be in Detroit or Memphis, or even SoCal. Not in fucking Cleveland. I don't care where Alan Freed worked when he said it.

They are not eligible yet, but I can pretty much guarantee they'll be there with time.

For someone as in love with KISS as you are, it's odd you scoff at their 90s & 00s incarnations.

Ehhh, agree they are light reincarinations, but those first two in the HOF? Maybe...MAYBE Slipknot.

If we are iffy on NIN this year, I can't rightly give Gwar a pass.

There's going to be slim pickens for Rock N' Roll by the time they start picking the 2030 inductees. Maybe that's why they're slowly introducing other genres.

I don't think many would argue the for technical musicianship of GWAR. Same could be said of KISS or the Sex Pistols. (Who I think both belong)

I saw GWAR live shortly before the lead (singer?) died. It was...certainly a unique experience.

You're right though, chronology aside, Slipknot is probably more likely to make it in before GWAR.

While I would agree with you on "where are these", I would have to disagree on some of the one that should be taken out.  Is there another HoF to accomidate them, if not then I would leave all but Ike in.

The RRHoF is a pretty badass place to go if you ever have the chance. While there, the thought of, this pweron or that person shouln't be in here, never crossed my mind.  Just to see some of the items donated by some of the biggest musicians of all time was sweet.

Not going to bother to explain but....

GWAR, Slipknot, ICP, etc are as related to KISS as the fat guy in the Carolina stands wearing a #1 jersey is to Cam.  I can grow a goatee and shave my head.  Doesn't make me Heisenberg.
