When Josh Harris' youth football coach told him he was going to be the team's long snapper, he wasn't sure what that meant. He found out, and last year, Harris signed a four-year contract extension worth $3,405,000 to continue as the long snapper for the Atlanta Falcons through the 2018 season.
"It was when I was in sixth or seventh grade when you actually start punting and kicking field goals in games," Harris said. "My coach told me I was going to be the long snapper, and I said 'Great. What's that?' He showed me the basics, and from there I kept working at it and taught myself how to do it."
NFL long snappers don't get much publicity -- unless they mess up. But the Gwinnett Daily Post recently profiled Harris.
Harris served as Auburn's long snapper for three seasons before joining the Falcons in 2012 as an undrafted rookie. He beat out 13-year NFL veteran Joe Zelenka in training camp for the job and has played in all 48 of Atlanta's regular-season games since.
Harris will have no competition in Atlanta's training camp, which opens July 30 in Flowery Branch, Ga., as he prepares for another season snapping to punter Matt Bosher and place-kicker Matt Bryant.
Harris said the key to success in long snapping is approaching each turn on the field the same way.
"You can't rank plays," Harris said. "Whether it's an extra point or a game-winning field goal, it's the same mentality. You have to go out there, throw a strike and do your job."
In his three seasons with the Falcons, Harris has made 10 tackles covering punts, including six unassisted stops.
