The U.S. Air Force scrambled intercept planes to respond to two separate incidents involving Russian bombers on July 4, according to reports.

Two pairs of Russian Tupolev Tu-95 bombers approached the U.S. west coast, Fox News reported. The first incident occurred at roughly 9:30 a.m. off the coast of Alaska; the second  happened at 10 a.m. off the coast of central California. In both cases, a pair of F-22s scrambled to intercept the bombers.

It is not known if the Russian planes were armed but the Tu-95 are capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

The Russian bombers were intercepted before they entered U.S. sovereign air space, which extends 12 miles out from the coast.

The TU-95, nicknamed the Bear, has been the staple of the Russian strategic bomber force for 40 years or longer. It's the Russian version of our B-52 bomber.

The TU-95 is pretty cool in that it has twin props on each engine. We used to scramble our F-14s to escort these big bastards away from the carrier I was on back in the Cold War years. We saw them daily when we were sailing around in the Caribbean.

Over the past weeks, the Russian military has reported numerous accidents that have raised questions about the safety of the country's military aircraft.
