Cam Newton: America’s Greatest Sports Redemption Story

Posted on June 9, 2015 by Chadd Scott

Cam Newton has become America’s greatest sports redemption story.

Kicked off the team at Florida for stealing and then exiled to Blinn Community College, Newton seemed destined to take his place among the thousands of promising young athletes never able to realize their potential.

Fortunately for Newton he found Auburn.

From the moment Newton became a Tiger his life has been on a fast track past simple redemption toward icon status.

An SEC Championship, the Heisman Trophy and Auburn’s first national championship in over 50 years would have cemented Newton as one of college football’s greatest turnarounds.  Cam, however, was just getting started.

First pick in the NFL Draft, major national product endorser, Auburn sociology graduate and now $100+ million dollar quarterback.

In the national conversation over Newton’s massive contract extension the media, not surprisingly, focused on trivial details: why isn’t his completion percentage higher, can he lead Carolina to a Super Bowl, if Newton is worth this much, how much is Andrew Luck worth?

The most important aspect of Newton signing his new contract is that he made it after beginning down a path from which few return.  Have we lost sight that Cam Newton was at one time not long ago a young man on the precipice of a life wasted, destined for, at best, irrelevance?

Cam Newton and his story are an inspiration.  Cam Newton and his story should be told to every young person who goes sideways for the next 25 years as an example that mistakes don’t define you when you don’t allow them to.

To focus on football when considering Cam Newton’s contract extension misses what makes this story most remarkable.

He didn’t make all the right decisions on his path to adulthood.  Most of us don’t.  Cam Newton’s story, because it features hardships and speed bumps the likes of which most of us encounter, becomes relatable and therefore provides more for us to learn from.

Auburn’s role in Newton’s redemption can’t be overstated.

Don’t take my word for it, take his.  No, don’t take his word for it, observe his actions.

Newton continues to be a fixture on the Auburn campus despite no longer needing anyone there for anything.

Five years ago Newton stood to benefit more from a relationship with Auburn than Auburn did from a relationship with him.  Coming out of Blinn, he was just a guy.  No one could have expected him to become the supernova he did.

But he became a supernova and doesn’t ever need to step foot in Lee County again if he doesn’t want to.

Newton could spend his free time on a yacht off the south of France hobnobbing with oil barons, eating Russian caviar, clubbing in Monaco with European fashion models and living a life you can’t even imagine growing up in College Park, GA.

He could take up residence at a poolside cabana in Las Vegas drinking Cristal out of an exotic dancer’s cheetah-print pump starring in his own real-life rap video.

That’s where I’d be.  You wouldn’t find my rear end in Haley Center posing for selfies with freshmen from Wetumpka.

Instead, Cam Newton continues to spend time in Auburn, AL which, despite its charms, hardly screams “jet set.”

He’s spent enough time there to finish his degree which stands as another extraordinary achievement.

If Newton were unable to realize the extent to which Auburn helped save him, and didn’t appreciate it, he would have long since put the place in his rear view mirror.  Every additional day he spends on that campus is his way of saying “thank you” to Auburn and the Auburn family for embracing him and allowing him to flourish.

I love Cam Newton.  I would have his babies.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Being fortunate enough (or just old enough) to see Pat, Bo and Cam, I would say he had what was best in both of them. :aubie:

Never heard anybody use more words to say less than Newton did  on the Sunday conversation on ESPN.

Of course the idiotic questions posed by the bimbo really gave him nowhere to run.
