Auburn cut its bowl costs in half with a shorter trip to its bowl destination last season.
The athletics department spent $1,671,722.59 on its Outback Bowl trip in December and January, amounting to nearly half the cost of their trip to the BCS National Championship in Pasadena, California a year earlier. Auburn spent $3.13 million for the trip at the end of the 2013 season.
Auburn was unable to sell 1,898 tickets of its 9,212-seat allotment at the Outback Bowl and absorbed those seats at a cost of $213,670 for Auburn, according to documents obtained Tuesday in an open records request.
Auburn spent $353,474 on transportation for the 732 people in its travel party, including the band, cheerleaders and athletics department officials. Auburn spent $1.7 million on travel a year ago to Pasadena, when the team traveled via plane. Most Auburn players traveled to Tampa, Florida in December in their own vehicles. Meals, lodging and per diem totaled $924,687 at the Outback Bowl.
The football team also spent $24,265 for the use of a practice facility ($6,423.65), Florida Highway Patrol escorts ($8,118.15), an audio visual and business center ($4,523.16), and security ($5,200).
