Understand, as a law enforcement agency, reports of domestic violence MUST be investigated.  This officer is talking to the suspect when shit goes bad.  A lot of people, LOT of people, are quick to say the police are too militaristic.  Too demanding, not patient enough.  Not understanding, not capable of being calm to diffuse a hostile situation.

So I ask, non LEO, what would you do different in this situation?

That is one of those tough situations where there is not much time to do anything.  Maybe you realize it then charge him to wrap him up, but of the time when the fucker has the drop on you like that there just isn't gonna be a good outcome for the good guys.
Dude was calm the whole time and didn't look like a threat.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

He might have made sure the guy kept his hands out of his pockets from the very start.  Other than that, I see nothing he could have done short of questioning the guy with gun drawn the whole time.

See, this is what pisses me off so bad about the Ferguson protests and other crap.  You can take an isolated incident like that and turn it into an explosion of racial tension, when their should be none.  But cops put their lives on the line every single day and this stuff has long since become commonplace.  Where's the marching for this 24 year old guy who lost his life just for doing his job?

You are correct, this was going to end bad no matter what.  If cop orders his hands out of his pockets as soon as he makes contact, then has to shoot..... WHY ARE THE MILITARY POLICE KILLING PEOPLE WITHOUT A WARRANT!!!!!

I am pro-LEO because I am LEO.  But I wish more people understood that sometimes you can't be laid back, Mr. Cool, smooth talk your way out of every situation.  This shit was always going to be bad...someone was always going to die in this situation.  Just pissed that it is a 24 year old kid who was the good guy who died when he should still be alive.

He absolutely should have.  But he's been talked to about being more friendly.  He's been talked to about not escalating a situation with loud verbal commands.  Maybe not by his command staff, but by the national media.  If he goes in that house, asks the subject to take his hands out of his pockets immediately in a manner that the suspect understands fully, he may still be alive.  Or he may have been involved in a shootout right then.  We'll never know.

My second guessing says that he should've trusted his instincts. He knew something was up and suspected a gun. He should've drawn his weapon and asked the dude to take his jacket off.

Easy to see that, now.

In reality, I would likely be dead now too.

I hope this guy gets what he deserves.

Just what the po-lice needs. Miami officers apparently spotted using local teens pictures for target practice. Bonding relationships within the African-American community.

Every "picture" target I have shot at was of some bama fun with acid washed jeans, a tank top and an awesome mullet.  So the target company can make that, but we can't use updated pictures of local people that we have a probability of being in a shootout with?  I'm confused.
But seriously, that was not the best idea those officers have had.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

http://fox2now.com/2015/01/16/police-body-camera-video-shows-suspect-shot-after-struggle/

Utah this time.
Tell me if I'm wrong but wasn't it a stupid move to not either have another officer holding this perp or to slip the second cuffs on before taking the others off?

Also, why in the hell did they not secure the knife as soon as the guy told them about it? Seems like that would be a part of protocol. And if they left the keys in car, that would seemingly be another thing that could have helped prevent this.

All said, it's pay day for dude's heirs, I'm guessing. A good lawyer gets this and it's jackpot. I know that there aren't any on here to expound but this smells like a good one.
