Auburn landed its second defensive lineman of the 2015 recruiting class this morning when Maurice Swain signed with the Tigers as a mid-year junior college transfer. The news was first reported by The Sun Herald.
The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Mississippi Gulf Coast tackle picked the Tigers over finalists Mississippi State and Kentucky. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining, and Auburn's lack of depth on the defensive line proved to be a major factor.
"(Auburn) stayed loyal to me," Swain told Rivals on Monday. "When I was in high school, Coach (Rodney) Garner is the one who told me about Gulf Coast. And then I remember talking to Coach (Gus) Malzahn before I got to Gulf Coast, and I asked him if he would give me a look (when I got out of junior college). He said he would, and he did."
In a poll posted yesterday on AL.com and GulfLive.com, 85.51 percent of readers expected Swain to sign with Auburn. Two of Swain's current teammates, Jason Smith and Kevin Phillips, joined Auburn earlier this morning.
Swain is ranked as a three-star prospect and the nation's No. 5 JUCO defensive tackle in the country in the 247Sports Composite. He tallied 32 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season.
Garner's ties to Swain date back to his time at Troup County High School in LaGrange, Ga., when Garner was recruiting him to Georgia. Swain committed to Indiana before taking the junior college route to Mississippi Gulf Coast.
