Look, A Christmas Story is a great movie but I just don't think it is the best resume for a defensive coordinator.

But that shot in Porky's is noteworthy.

Just curious, does anyone think Bill Clark would be interested in being hired as a position coach? Just a thought. I am also curious, what is his specialty on the defense, DBs, LBs, what?

I hear you man. With that said, anyone thought about giving Bill Clark a chance? I hear he would be great. And is willing to meet up with random posters in hotel rooms.

Will Muschamp reportedly offered Auburn defensive coordinator job

Nick Bromberg

Dr. Saturday
.Will Muschamp can be Auburn's defensive coordinator if he wants the job.

According to AuburnSports.com, the former Florida coach has been offered the defensive coordinator position with the Tigers. Ellis Johnson parted ways with the school on Sunday.

From Auburn Sports:

Sources say Muschamp also has received a lucrative offer from Texas A&M, which fired defensive coordinator Mark Snyder on Sunday. Auburn has assured Muschamp that it will compete with any offer made by a university program, though at least two NFL organizations have contacted him with provisional offers.

Gus Malzahn doesn't want to pressure Muschamp and is willing to give him time to plot his next move. Muschamp hasn't given any of his suitors meaningful information regarding his personal, long-term plan.

A&M dismissed Snyder on Friday, a day after losing to LSU on Thanksgiving. Florida announced that Muschamp wouldn't be returning after losing to South Carolina at home on Nov. 15. The two SEC schools have become the leading suitors for Muschamp's services as a defensive coordinator, and his arrival will raise the perception of whichever team he joins.

Before becoming Texas' defensive coordinator and coach-in-waiting prior to being hired as Florida's head coach, Muschamp was Auburn's defensive coordinator for two seasons in 2006 and 2007.

If Muschamp doesn't go to Auburn, Auburn Sports lists UAB coach Bill Clark and Memphis defensive coordinator Barry Odom as possible candidates as well. UAB is shutting down football at the end of the school year.

Auburn's defense was No. 57 in the NCAA's total defense ranking in 2014 and gave up more than 30 points in five straight SEC games, including a 55-44 loss to Alabama to end the regular season.

Ya'll are all busting nuts on the coordinator. That's important, no doubt, but what about the players? What is on the roster they can use and what will have to be recruited (or bought for you REC lurkers)? Auburn doesn't have much in terms of experience on the D-line coming back next year. And spare me the "Carl Lawson is Lawrence Taylor's illegitimate son" stuff. Does he have potential? Yes but he's as much an unknown as any of the other guys coming back. What about linebackers? Frost and 'Nova, (a.k.a. the Whiff Tackle Twins), Swain (cramp in my knees), and who else? DBs? I guess we have that other transfer from Georgia waiting in the wings but who else comes back?

Make no mistake, there's a lot here to fix on the defensive side of the ball.

Maybe I'm in the dark here, but what is so special about the guy from Memphis?

Quote
Barry Odom hasn't been a coordinator long, but his track record is impressive. (Kim Klement/USA TODAY Sports)
AGE: 38
ALMA MATER: Missouri, 1999
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE:
•
â—¦Memphis defensive coordinator/safeties, 2012-14
â—¦Missouri safeties coach, 2009-11 (Under Gary Pinkel)
â—¦Missouri director of football ops, 2006-08 (Under Pinkel)
â—¦Missouri director of football recruiting, 2004-05 (Under Pinkel)

SCOUTING REPORT: Odom's name just now is becoming connected with positions at top-tier programs, but he was a finalist for the Arkansas coordinator job two years ago and turned down Indiana last year. He's intense, but he's never crazed. He played linebacker at Mizzou yet has become a secondary specialist. He's favors a 4-3 system that emphasizes quickness from a personnel perspective. Odom likes to create havoc by mixing in a variety of blitzes while masking his coverages. It's more about confusion. He favors a Cover-2 shell, but also used Cover-3 and Cover-0 several times per game last season. He rarely drops his box personnel below seven because he's adamant about run defense. His Memphis teams play with a lot of exuberance and energy. The Tigers were a mess before Odom arrived -- last in yards allowed -- and finished the 2014 regular season among conference leaders in both points and yards allowed.

MOST APPEALING TRAITS: Shrewd strategist, background as a recruiter, career on the rise, salary demands
POTENTIAL SNAGS: Inexperience, odd career path (landed first on-the-field job at 30)
INTANGIBLES: Odom is very popular among the intellectual sector of the football community, which could make him an appealing choice for a guy like Malzahn.

Outside whoever the fuck they play, he has increased the program drastically since his arrival.  Including they have the #24 ranked Total Defense in the nation and the #7 ranked Scoring Defense in the nation.

The most amazing thing I see in this article is that there were 57 teams in division 1 that had a WORSE defense than us.

I feel bad for them

I wish Bill the best - he's a decent guy - but I don't want him anywhere near our program.  He was one of the bammers that helped make me the rabid Auburn girl I am today via the years of teasing and brutal treatment on Monday after the Iron Bowl.  I just don't know if I could ever trust him in terms of putting Auburn first - if the money and the need to compete could overcome being raised a Turd.  Loyalty can be deep rooted in the psyche.

There's a lot of  in this post.  On a glass half full take, the right call on a new DC  could make an incredible difference.  Granted, they need to also make the right calls with the remaining slots in the recruiting class, but I truly believe the way they were taught in practice and the game plans, calls, formations etc.  were the biggest problems.

Anyone notice in the last few weeks that every time an analyst broke down some of our defensive film, they were harping on wrong formations and wrong technique?  They showed one run up the middle by Chubb about 20 times to point out how Frost took on the fullback with the wrong shoulder and was completely taken out of the play.  Time and time again, it was, "Look how they're lined up here.  No way they can get to..."  "They have an overload on this side and Auburn never recognizes and adjusts to..."

COACH BIL WARNING.  In the first half, Bama had a run around their left side that I think they scored on.  The replay was shown from behind the AU defense.  Bama had it clearly overloaded on their left side and Coach BIL is screaming at the screen.  "President.  What the hell are you lining up inside the tackle for?  What the hell are you doing?"  Gimel also crashed down toward the center and the Bama back waltzed around the left side with a convoy.

Formation?  Is that how he was taught?  Is that what was called? I'm not a coach and even I was asking WTF?

And the icing on the cake?  Oh yeah, we can cover the baddest man on the planet with a corner all night.  No need to get out of our base defense.  He's just one guy.

Coach Freeze, how were you able to keep Amari Cooper in check?

"Well, we used an over/under technique and made sure we always had....."  Right or wrong, they had a plan to account for maybe the best offensive player in the country.  We accounted for Cooper by going, "Yep, he's right over there.  Mincy's on him".

Long rant short, the game may have passed Johnson by and making the right choice for the new DC may turn this D around quickly.
