Auburn defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson has been fired, a source familiar with the decision told AL.com.

The second-year coordinator, who has coached at four SEC schools, was alerted Sunday of his termination by coach Gus Malzahn, according to AuburnUndercover.com. FootballScoop.com was the first to report the departure.

Auburn's defense allowed 30 points or more in the final six SEC games of the season, the worst stretch in school history. The Tigers allowed an average of 39 points during that time.

The Tigers are coming off a 55-44 loss at No. 1 Alabama, the defense's worst performance since 2012.

Malzahn said Saturday he wasn't ready to address Johnson's job status.

"I'm not going there right now," Malzahn said in the aftermath of the loss. "Right now we're disappointed we got beat and that's it."

Auburn will be searching for its fourth defensive coordinator in the last five years.
