Auburn coach Gus Malzahn says his Tigers need to be "big boys," to be men in the face of disappointment.

Defensive back Jonathan Jones says the Tigers plan to be just that.

"He's just being honest with you," Jones said. "You can take it two ways: You can take it as a challenge, or pity yourself and put your head down and give up on the rest of the season. Or you can be a big boy and become a man and face the season with your head up and keep working. We just really took it as a challenge. You have to."

Auburn is looking to rebound from its loss to Georgia with regular-season-ending wins over Samford, this Saturday at 6 p.m. in Jordan-Hare Stadium, then again at Alabama at 6:15 p.m. on Nov. 29.

"Coach said the season isn't over," Jones said. "We still have two more games. We have to block that out of our minds, which is hard to do, but we have to block it out of our minds and continue on."

Auburn is 7-3 and now will try to position itself for a big finish and a good bowl game. The Tigers, admittedly, were hoping for more.

"It's not what our goal was. That's not what our aspirations were," said receiver C.J. Uzomah. "But at the same time, we do that and we win our bowl game, that's another 10-win season. We win this week and that's 20 wins in two seasons after going 3-9 (in 2012). I think that's a huge accomplishment. I don't think that's been done in the history of college football. Going forward, we're looking for three more wins."

It starts with Samford, and Jones said a win would help "get our momentum back. Even though we're playing Samford, you do the little things and get your confidence back as a team, and that's very important heading into the last two games."

Jones said the Georgia game, a 34-7 loss, was "1. really, missed assignments and missed tackles. We gave great effort. We just have to do the little things.

"2. The game was nothing like the score showed. We were in the game, we were making plays on defense. A few mishaps cost us the game."

1.
2. The score was very much like the game.

I truly hope they get it together for the last game, a beating on the turds would make this season not as disappointing.

I agree the score isn't indicative of the game. Gurley and Chubb aren't distance runners, so they were getting winded by the second half. And our offense apparently thought one TD was a day's work.

I like them forgetting most of that game. And I really hope they are playing with an edge trying to get to 10. It will be amazing to me, if they do. Will be a great comeback from a letdown and set us up nicely for next yr. Also, a boost in recruiting, I would think.

I was watching on the science channel the other night and there is quite possibly another universe out there in which we are undefeated this season and in the 4 team playoff. You could talk to Bottomfeeder about making a time travel machine for you.

Yeah I don't like the "we were in it the whole time!" angle.  Maybe in the 1st quarter.  Maybe you can say a muffed punt and freak-of-nature-miss on the blocked punt hampered us a bit.

But after that?  The defense was being manhandled by a rather one dimensional offense.  The offense was out of whack the entire game.  It would be better to admit that the team got its butt beat and needs to figure out how to right the wheels.

Tackling Gurley well enough - as much as you can with TG anyway.

Not tackling Chubb at all.

Some plays were made. Some were not. Those that were not were bad...very bad.

Plus the guy is a 19 year old kid full of emotions right now. I wouldn't read too much into it. He isn't claiming to be Hemmingway.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I'd say we were in it until the third quarter for sure. The roughing the kicker gave them a free set of downs to make it 14-7 and the stupid ass PI on Therezie gave them a fresh set of downs on third down to make it 17-7 with a few seconds before half. Then, we hold them to a punt to open third, and our fucking WR's decide not to fucking catch balls that hit them in the hands. We still had a shot and were playing decent at this point. ANother penalty and they get the ball on about the 40 and shove it down our ass. Then and only then was it over...

The funny part is that you guys continue to think you are right about something. And sadly, you still aren't.

"we suck, ellis is the problem...we suck, ellis is the problem..." - thats about the extent of both of your posts everyday.

What WE!! said...effing all of it. I was as pissed as anyone. Nothing we can do about it at this point but pull up our bootstraps and line up again. There is no magical cure. Like Kaos said, the team that mauled LSU is still out there. We know it is there. Whatever it takes for that team to find the field on Nov 29th is what needs to happen. If we are tired from the schedule - well, we get a week off sort of. Lack of focus? Well, we get two weeks to prepare. Internal strife? Coaches best fix the shit. A shot at double digit wins should also be good motivation. A good bowl is on the line as well. At this point we can put it all into one game and one game only.

What we (and others)  were saying is that we have regressed as the year went on. We are tired of seeing the basic fundamentals of defense not being corrected week in and week out. Continued missed assignments, very shoddy tackling, bad angles and such. Like you said (Lack of focus) which seems to be getting worst, not better. I  don't recall anybody saying we sucked, I do recall folks saying that it looks like Ellis's defense is a problem. For you not to see that our defense gave a 41 points to a team that struggled to put 21 on a ULM team is what I don't understand.

Am I right? Prolly not, I just know what I see.

Easy game this week and then we can make our season by beating the turds and knocking them out of the playoff race and then off to a good bowl game.  Lose and we end up in Shreveport most likely. Very disappointing end to this season.

Something that worries me about our D is something Saban once said.  I hate that man with a fiery passion but I think he may be on to something here...
