The story surrounding the death of former Auburn and Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas continues to take bizarre turns.
A second road rage report from the minutes before Bironas was killed in a car accident near his Nashville home late Saturday has emerged. Two Belmont University students told The Tennessean newspaper on Tuesday that Bironas threatened to kill them and tried to ram their vehicle shortly before running off the road and crashing his SUV into a drainage culvert.
Corey Fraley said he was a passenger in a vehicle that pulled up behind Bironas' 2009 GMC Yukon and noticed a burning smell coming from Bironas' SUV.
"His window was down, and we pulled up and I said, "Hey man, just a heads up, something's burning from your exhaust. Your exhaust smells horrible, just wanted to let you know,'" Fraley told The Tennessean. "He looked over at me and said 'I'm going to kill everybody in your (expletive) vehicle.' It was so random, so bizarre I was like, 'What?' And he said the exact same thing again."
Fraley said the pickup truck he was riding in, driven by a fellow Belmont student with two others in the backseat, turned left, but Bironas followed them at a high rate of speed. "He tried to sideswipe the vehicle and missed us by a foot," Fraley said.
Fraley and his party eventually evaded Bironas, and called 911. Bironas soon after had an altercation with the passengers in a second vehicle, who also called 911.
"We let him go on past us because he was trying to run us off the road and we don't know who he is,'' the woman, later identified as Daphne Lauderdale, told the 911 dispatcher. "... We just pulled out of his way, and we saw all this smoke and pulled over.
"There is something wrong with him. He gave us a mean look. We don't even know him, and he tried to run us off the road."
Fraley told The Tennessean he and his friends later found out the driver of the SUV was killed in a crash. His roommate later texted him a photo of Bironas.
"As soon as I saw that face,'' Fraley said. "I know for a fact that it was Rob Bironas in that vehicle chasing us.
"I am not trying to soil this guy's reputation or his legacy. I know this community thinks very fondly of him. I am just being honest, and I'm trying to get this off my chest. He tried to kill us. He told us he was going to try and kill us."
Bironas kicked at Auburn from 1997-99 before transferring to Georgia Southern. He kicked for the Titans from 2005-2013 before being released this past spring.
Bironas was married in June to country singer Rachel Bradshaw, the daughter of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw. Rachel Bradshaw reportedly told police her husband left home without telling her less than an hour before the fatal accident.
Rachel Bradshaw told police Bironas was not intoxicated, and there were no signs of alcohol at the crash scene. An autopsy was performed late Monday, but toxicology reports are not expected back for several weeks.
