Thoughts - Week One

Thoughts - Week One
« on: August 31, 2014, 10:31:40 AM »
- As I sit here listening to the bubbles pop and fizz through the bottom of my drink, I can't help but think, "hot damn, Toomer's Lemonade is delicious."

- You know what else is delicious?  Victory.

Auburn

- Anyone else think we performed almost identical to last year's team?  Unstoppable run game when Marshall's in.  Dynamic passing game when Johnson's in.  Pretty good defense at times with "oh fuck we suck again" defense in the middle.

- CAP is a BEAST.  Totally underrated performer yesterday even if he was getting accolades from the Sportscenter guys.  He's shifty, powerful, and determined.  He gets yard after initial contact.  He has great vision.  He had one bad fumble but that was one of those, "Welp, whacanyado?" hits that not even Bo Jackson could have avoided.

- Duke Williams has been an ultra-athlete for far too long.  Maybe he's whole career.  He'll learn soon enough that he can't dance his way to a touchdown multiple times a game.  Run the route, make the catch, try to gain some extra yards by going forward and not side to side, and then go down for the next play.  This guy could go down as one of the best receivers to play at Auburn.  I honestly would be shocked if he doesn't.

- Sammie Coates was called for holding early in the game.  I watched the replay a few times.  I didn't think he was holding at all.  I think he was dominating the fuck out of his guy and the guy was getting bull-driven into the dirt.  Shit refs need to learn what physical football is.

- Which is what we do on offense.  We're physical.  God it's fun, isn't it?  We pound defenses.  Our receivers are strong.  Our running backs are strong.  Our offensive line is strong.  Oh and we're fast as hell too.

- But our defense?  Same ole same ole.  I don't know why Auburn does not allow Auburn to completely blow out an SEC opponent.  We were vastly superior to Arkansas and for some reason, from the middle of the 1st until halftime, we decided to play pussyfoot on the defensive line.

- Kudos though for getting it together and shutting down Arkansas in the 2nd half.

Arkansas

- Bret Bielema is an embarrassment to the SEC, and I would not be surprised if he's fired at the end of this season.  He runs his mouth about other coaches, makes outlandish excuses for his team's failures, and is just a fat slob of lard that somehow ended up with a hot wife.  Even money shouldn't overcome being a legit Tolkien troll from Mordor.

- Alex Collins last season looked like a potential all timer, but I was not very impressed with him yesterday.  There were a few holes that were easy touchdowns for a Todd Gurley.

Georgia

- Speaking of Todd Gurley, Todd Gurley is a beast.  I said it last year.  I believe at the end of Gurley's college career, he'll be on McFadden's level of SEC legends.  Maybe not Herschel and Bo.  If he had stayed healthy last year, I think he could be there.  But he'll jump to the NFL after this season.

- I didn't watch a whole lot of Georgia's game.  I was lucky to catch three of Gurley's four touchdowns.  From what I saw, Georgia looked to be playing an inferior opponent.  Kirk Herbstreit saying that Georgia is the #1 team in the country really hurts his credibility as a commentator on sports.

Clemson

- I wouldn't mind seeing Dabo go down as a crazy man clutching the copyright paperwork on his stupid name, living the rest of his life in a padded cell.  I just don't like the guy.  Must be the crimson in him.

Alabama

- Can I dare say enjoy it?  That team looked like a turd.  Maybe a competitive turd.  They can win the turd category in the pageant.  But a turd nonetheless.

- Where was the vaunted Saban defense?  I watched a good bit of the 1st quarter and I watched a good bit of Alabama's defenders get shoved around by West Virginia.  West Virginia's the team coached by a lady named Dana.

- I thought Blake Simms looked pretty good actually.  The fact that he can run makes him a scary threat on offense.  He had some pinpoint throws with some great athleticism in the receiver department.  But that's a whole field away from where they've been the past six seasons.  Very much a beatable team.

LSU

- Les Miles has charm and luck.  He also has some really good veteran running backs.  He also has a true freshman that was apparently promised a bunch of carries in the first game.  Fournette looked scared and jittery.  I don't know if he's that athletic.  He typically fell down before he ever got a chance to run.  He also was scared of the ball too as he pretty much jumped out of its way one play.

- If it weren't for Vanderbilt's whatever-you-want-to-call-it on Thursday night, LSU would have the biggest black eye on the conference.  A Big 10 team that's as bland as cheese curds whipped some corndog ass for 3 and a half quarters.  Not Ohio State.  Wisconsin.  Not Michigan.  Wisconsin.

- Another previous powerhouse that is very beatable this season.

Florida State

- Famous Jameis has entered the building, and he looks like everybody else.  He's a really good quarterback and he had a great run to put his team over the top against an unranked Oklahoma State.  But much like in the BCSCG last season, he didn't look like a world beater.  He made mistakes.  Crumbled under pressure.  But like a great college quarterback should do, he put the team on his shoulders and won the game.

Final Thoughts

- The championship runs through Auburn and the team doing the running may be Texas A&M.  We NEED the crowd that day.  It's a long way away, but that's the one team after week one that I feel could be a major difficulty for us.  I think we can score 40 against them.  Can we stop them from scoring 41?

- Our secondary has to come up with big plays and I don't just mean intercepting an aberrant pass.  We need to close in immediately on receivers that catch the ball.  We need corners to shut down receivers on their routes.  We need to make real tackles.  We need to rid ourselves of blown assignments.

- We need more discipline in the defensive line.  We need linebackers that can hold their ground.

- We need a defense that can play FOUR quarters of solid football.  They don't have to be great.  Our offense is loaded for a good 30+ points a game.  We just need a defense that doesn't suddenly give up 15-30 yard plays multiple times in a quarter.  We haven't really had a defense like that since Tuberville.

I only know the first week is behind us. It takes several more weeks of adjusting hopefully without any close calls (WSU 2013).Great to see some newcomers emerge and I'm not ready to hand out any fucking trophies just yet-the journey just began.

Some random thoughts.

Georgia
Slow the roll. Beat a Clemson team without Sammie Watkins or Taj Boyd.  I hate Dabo and am glad they got their ass beat, but I don't think that's going to be the only ass beating they take this year.  Clemson is going to lose four or five games.  The ACC is utter seagull piss, probably a worse league than Conference USA but Clemson loses to FSU, NC or NC State, Louisville, S.Carolina and maybe GA Tech.  So let's hold off on putting the perennial also-ran Bulldogs at the top of any list.

LSU
Yeah, they came back to win.  Wisconsin lost half its defense and the Bengals finally broke some runs. The Badgers went into d'oh mode once they got up by 17 and played like a spastic monkey.  LSU wasn't the best team on the field and their quarterback is absolutely awful.  He's going to make them wish Jordan Jefferson was still alive before its all over.

Alabama
One of the luckiest teams I've ever seen. Their quarterback is also pretty weak.  They won't lose them all, but there are six teams on their schedule capable of beating them (Mississippi State,  LSU in the battle of awful quarterbacks, Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M and Auburn).  They won't lose them all, but they're not going to win them all either.  ESPN/al.com can keep blowing smoke up their ass all they want, but this is an empire on the verge of crumbling.  Nothing lasts forever -- just look at history.

Mississippi State
Slow that roll, too.  Yeah they whipped up on Southern Miss. This is a team that lost 61-13 to Marshall last year. Lost 55-14 to North Texas. Lost 41-7 to Florida Atlantic.  Went 1-23 over the last two seasons.  Ohhh, it was a rivalry game!  Yes, in the same way Auburn - UAB or Auburn -Samford is a rivalry game.  MSU looked exactly like MSU has looked for the last decade.  Big, slow, short of any game changers or real playmakers.  They will muddy up some people. They're built to slug it out with teams like LSU, Alabama and Arkansas. They can lean on Ole Miss and possibly beat them.  I don't think they can stay with A&M or Auburn.  Looked like a four or five loss team to me.

South Carolina
They will get better, but looked a step behind physically and mentally.

A&M
Not sure what to make of the ass whipping they unloaded on South Carolina. They did to the cocks what the hogs thought they were going to do to Auburn. Good game plan, prepared to take what SC gave them. I don't think they can do that week in and week out simply because prep time is diminished.  They had a first game mission and I don't think it can be sustained.  Don't see them losing many, though. I think they have a chance to skull fuck Alabama and take the shine off that turd, though.

Arkansas
Bert needs to recognize that he doesn't belong in the SEC.  I agree with Booger, Arkansas doesn't look substantially improved to me.  Auburn was two third and short conversions from laying a 70-7 type beating on their ass. Even when it was 21-21 I wasn't nervous at all. My friend says "wow, its a lot closer than I expected.." and I was all "meh, we got this."  Arkansas didn't get Auburn's best game and still left with blood running from its nose and mouth.  Which SEC game is that fat bastard going to win with his archaic style of play?  A&M? No. Alabama? No. Georgia? No. State? Maybe. LSU? No (similar teams, talent disparity). Ole Miss? Maybe. Missouri? No.  Wouldn't surprise me to see them go 0-SEC again.  At BEST they win two SEC games. So two in the  SEC, a tossup against Texas Tech and probable wins against Nicholls State, UAB and Northern Illinois.  Is that enough for the biggest idiot in CFB (Jeff Long, who is coincidentally in charge of the damn Final Four) to keep that bloated butterbutt on the Hog sidelines?  Okay by me.  Beating their whiny ass is fun.

Ole Miss
They are who we thought they were. Hugh Freeze is Malzahn/Sumlin lite. Bo Wallace is a loser at heart.  May pull off a surprising win somewhere. Will probably end the season losing to MSU once again.  I was not impressed with their effort against a Petersen-less Boise.

FSU
Not as good as they were -- and really weren't that good last year.  Were a QB protect-my-head fumble away from losing to a mediocre OK State team.  Problem is, there isn't a single team in the ACC that would have a winning record in the SEC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, Conference USA, MAC or AHSAA 7A Classification.  Unlike the rest of the teams in the country, they only have to really prepare for one or two games a year.  When they make the Final Four, they won't win it all because it will be the first time in years they've had to play well two weeks in a row.

Ohio State
They suck.

The offense is pretty fucking spectacular, regardless of the QB under center (or in the shotgun, as the case may be).  Typical first game lack of polish, but light years ahead of last year's version already.  I'm impressed by Johnson's willingness to sit on the bench.  He could be a superstar at almost any school of his choosing.

The defense seems to be identical to last season's: maddeningly ineffective in the first half and smothering in the 2nd (sans the UGA game).  This is simply Johnson's style, apparently.  He plays conservative in the first half to get a sense of the opponent and then draws up a 2nd half plan.  He's pretty fucking great at doing it, I just wish his talents extended to watching game film during the week.

Special teams look solid.  Carlson had a great day at all his positions; I especially love the touchbacks on kickoff.

Finally: Bert, you punted twice from inside the Auburn 35?

                          :haha:

Almost forgot to mention the tailgate.  Nothing wild and crazy this year, but was great to see everyone.  AUTailgatingRules deserves huge props for delivering a handle of Crown to the group.  After what we did to his golf course, this is proof positive that he's a man of high character.

Clemson also got beat like 123-10 last year by FSU in Death Valley (snicker) WITH their superstars. They weren't that great last year either. And sure are not great this year. Prob a 5-7 team in our conference.

And color me a LITTLE shocked on the Vols last night. Utah State is a quality team. Keeton is a good player. And Tenn handled them easily. I think Jones is a sound coach. Tenn is the enemy of my enemies, so....I don't mind them doing well against any of our other SEC counterparts.

Based on my astute observation of the games in which I saw enough of to form an opinion, Auburn looks:
Better than: Bama, Arky, ole miss, state, FSU, wisky, Clemson, sc

Prob as good as: LSU, Thuga

Behind: tamu

We have 2 of the best QBs and receivers and maybe the best o line.

I think our d is improved but that won't be the last time I say dammit Trovon this season. That was a mighty big o line and I think our conditioning helped us in 2nd half. Hogs looked all gived out and tuckered.

In a nut shell, we are looking good.

Not sure how good Troy is but UAB whipped the piss out of them Saturday. They both have knack for pulling out of the blue upsets. Now that MSU is getting some praise, I'm thinking UPSET ALERT!

Too bad it is not in Bham, we could go over and watch in person.

Was glad to see everybody and the crowd at the X-gate seems to be getter bigger and bigger. We stayed in the stadium through the rain delay and watched the end of the game, by the time we got back most everybody had left, so we hopped in rental keen and went to Opelika to eat. Looking at maiking another game, but trying to justify $225.00 a night for a Best Western in really sticking in my shorts.
