Quote
Alabama's early-week plan is to play two quarterbacks on Saturday against West Virginia , with fifth-year senior Blake Sims the current favorite to start, CBSSports.com has learned.

Touted Florida State transfer Jacob Coker will play in the Georgia Dome, but he failed to create significant separation in Bama's quarterback race, and is expected to come off the bench.

The next three practices could change the outlook. As of Monday night, the team's plan was similar to Alabama's 2011 opener against Kent State, when A.J. McCarron and Philip Sims split time.

McCarron, of course, started the game, became Bama's three-year starter and helped the Tide win two national titles. Sims transferred to Virginia and eventually landed at Winston-Salem State.

Blake Sims, a fifth-year senior (and no relation to Phillip Sims), has completed 23 of 39 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns as McCarron's primary backup. While with FSU, Coker threw for 295 yards with a touchdown and interception on 21-of-41 passing.

FSU coach Jimbo Fisher has raved about Coker's ability and stressed how close Coker was to winning the starting job over Jameis Winston a year ago, prompting an assumption in the media (myself included) that Coker would naturally ease into the job.

The job very well might be his long-term, but clearly Alabama needs to see more. Sims has performed well but it's uncertain whether the athletic quarterback is truly suited for Alabama's pro-style sets.

If both quarterbacks fall apart Saturday, redshirt sophomore Alec Morris will get a look.

Coach Nick Saban, when listing Coker and Sims as co-starters Monday, used a baseball analogy to describe the race. "Whatever pitcher starts the game (isn't) necessarily going to pitch nine innings," Saban told local reporters.

Cecil Hurt a few months ago:
Quote
One could almost feel the collective exhale when Saban, speaking to the media prior to a Crimson Caravan event, confirmed that Jacob Coker was in school.

Coker, a Mobile native, was Florida State's backup quarterback last season. However, he finished school and received a release from FSU (which might have parted with Coker less willingly had they known what would happen to the price of seafood.) Thus, he made an immediate-eligibility transfer to Alabama. Saban didn't say so, of course, but Coker might be the odds-on favorite to start this fall as the Alabama quarterback.

But, but, but....Coker is a Johnny Unitas Award Finalist. One of the best 21 QB's in the country.  He's on everybody's Heisman watch list.  How could this be?

Blake Sims Still Leading Alabama QB Battle Over Jacob Coker
johnpennington
By johnpennington @ Mr Sec  Published on: August 27th. 2014, 10:34am

Yesterday it became a bit of national news that Blake Sims is leading Jacob Coker in the battle to become Alabama's next starting quarterback.  The only issue?  Sims has led the battle with Coker all along.  Sims is a senior, a veteran who should have a full grasp of the Crimson Tide offense, even with new coordinator Lane Kiffin running it.  Coker arrived just months ago after transferring in from Florida State.

According to The Birmingham News reports that little has changed in the quarterback pecking order since the start of fall camp.  Sims gets the first reps with the ones, then comes Coker.

However, both players are expected to play in Saturday's Georgia Dome opener against West Virginia.  In other words, the start to the 2014 season might remind more than a few Crimson Tide fans of the beginning to their 2011 campaign.  In that season, Phillip Sims (no relation to the current Bama quarterback) played along with AJ McCarron in the opener against Kent State.  But McCarron took control of the job and the competition was put to bed early.

Thanks to the hype surrounding Coker -- a junior who threw a grand total of 41 passes in two years at FSU -- there will be many dressed in crimson and houndstooth who'll be hoping the transfer outplays Sims and nabs the starting job.  The reality is that Coker is just as much of an unproven commodity as Sims.

For that reason, we simply say, "May the best man win."

Sabin just doesn't want to show his hand too early with Coker. He doesn't need the reps.

Why has it not occurred to anyone that Jimbo was pulling a master class in reverse psychology bullshit when he raved about Coker?  It was all Crab Legs, all the time last summer - first I have ever heard of it being any kind of a tight race.  And if you thought your team might wind up playing the Turds in a major bowl game like, say, the BCS Champ, why in the hell would you not secretly want them to sign a shitty ass QB??

Here's how it went down:

Jimbo raves abt Coker, Coker gets BMOC Big Head syndrome, Sabinz and Coker both buy into the hype, the media falls into line because Lord Sabinz falls for it, the turd masses anoint the white boy the second coming of Namath... and then BOOM!  Coker's true abilities (or lack there of) are revealed - maybe he even half asses it after believing his own hype.  Add in that Sims is totally motivated because he had to hold AJ MCTatdouche's clipboard for so long, and now some backup is trying to take his spot?  Homie don't play that game.

And the Turd Nation implodes while Jimbo sits back and laughs his ass off.

Coker's resume' speaks for itself.  He was a 3 star recruit.  He spent two years in mop up duty role throwing at a 50% clip (That's 47/96th in Chad math) more interceptions than TD's and sacked 5 times.

Not highly rated....not accurate....not mobile.  But Lord Saybinz offered him so he must be all world.  (If not, Lord Saybinz shall make it be so) And the midgets' minions got all the validation needed when Jimbo said, "Yeah, the kid throws a tight spiral.  He was pushing Captain Crablegs"

So I guess, at this point, we need to be asking ourselves, what kind of QB is Sims?  Did he get meaningful reps at practice or is he technically a back up who has leapt into the starting role now that Coker is looking more like his past self instead of the turd's future?  I don't remember seeing him play, and I don't make it a habit to check out stats on any turd players - so I will just hang up and listen.

Gotta say, this sentence may prove to be the tell after all:

Quote
Sims is a senior, a veteran who should have a full grasp of the Crimson Tide offense, even with new coordinator Lane Kiffin running it.

You know Kiffie has fucked around with stuff just enough to confuse anyone - he ain't stable.  So I wonder if he will have undone any of that "full grasp" bullshit.

All I am gonna say is - GO 'EERS!!

And another thing...

Other than the fact that (a) they are racist and (b) they are stupid turds, WHY would you want Coker to be better than Sims and be your starter JUST BECAUSE of the hype?  Is it just pride - you don't want to look stupid for crowing that he is the be all end all? Too late, assholes.

Personally, I don't give a rat's ass where someone comes from or how highly they are touted - the guy who does the best job with the rock wins the job!

Never seen him play either.  Heard he was abysmal in the spring game. May be way off but I heard something like 11-34 or some shit like that.  Must have been because of the greatest defense evah.  Better than 92'.
