Robenson Therezie, Auburn's returning starter at the hybrid, or 'Star' position in the Tigers' defense, may not be available early in the season, according to defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson.
The reasons for Therezie's lack of availability are unclear.
With Therezie's status in doubt, the Tigers are turning to junior Justin Garrett, who was the starter at the position last season before foot injuries ended his season, to take over the role against Arkansas.
"We're a little nervous about our depth behind Justin," Johnson said. "With Therezie right now, we're not sure he's going to be able to play early."
Asked to clarify the reasons for Therezie's lack of availability, Johnson did not say the senior was injured, as he normally would, saying only that Therezie has not gotten a lot of practice reps so far in the first two weeks of training camp.
"He just hasn't had a lot of reps, a lot of practice reps, getting Justin ready," Johnson said. "Right now, we've got to get some depth out there."
Therezie emerged as a breakout star after taking over for Garrett last season. In 14 games, Therezie made 57 tackles, intercepted four passes and earned honorable mention All-SEC honors.
With that resume on file, Therezie has already been named a preseason All-SEC second team pick and a member of the watch list for the Bednarik Award, annually given to the nation's top defensive player.
