FSU finds a way to pay Jameis Winston

Florida State is doing the right thing.

The school will reportedly pay quarterback Jameis Winston $60,000 to play football this season. That’s a small portion of the millions he’ll help the university generate, but is far more than most players will receive.

Oh. The NCAA, you ask? It’s fine with this whole arrangement.

Florida State appears to be taking advantage of a loophole that allows it to dip into a reserve fund set aside to pay for things students athletes might need. Usually, that means buying them a flight home in the event of a family emergency. Or a new suit, should they need one for a national media appearance.

In this case, it’s going to pay for Winston’s insurance.

Yahoo first reported that Winston had purchased both “total permanent disability” coverage as well as “loss of value” coverage. The first pays out if he is injured and can never play football again. The second pays out if an injury causes him to be drafted below where he’s currently projected, which is solidly in the first 10 picks.

Winston stands to make between $8-10 million if the policies are needed, according to Yahoo.

First off, it's not okay.  Even if there's a way to get around it being an NCAA violation, I'm blown away that the student body is not protesting the hell out of this.  $60 large being used to pay for an insurance policy.  That's 4 years of tuition and books at most Universities.  And if you do it for him, how can the other players not demand the same.  Anyone on that team with even a reasonable shot at playing on Sundays, and there are several, could demand the same thing.

On another note, when I heard this I immediately knew our argument about the Julio's of the world wearing a nice new suit every Saturday was fruitless.  Even if Tom Al-Bar Bar provided the threads, all Bama has to say is, "Hey, the NCAA allows this discretionary fund."

I'm not sure how this all works, but you can buy insurance on just about anything if it can proven to be a necessity on your life.  I know I could purchase insurance on my fingers since I play guitar for money.  Not worth the cost to me but it is possible.

Winston isn't the first to do this by the way.  I want to say Manziel took out a similar plan.  I know as a GTA at Auburn, I can purchase insurance through the university, which could be worded - I guess - as part of a scholarship or fellowship.  Maybe some athletes receive a different kind of football scholarship?  I know baseball players don't get a full.  Maybe football players on average don't get a full scholarship, at least, not the "fullest" they offer.  Maybe only the elite players are able to get the kind of scholarship that offers payment for insurance policies.

It's an interesting topic that some journalist should look into.

It's not the insurance policy.  That's been going on for-evah.  Lloyd's of London will insure a toenail if they can make a profit.  It's the fact that FSU is forking over $60K and calling it a necessity from the allowed discretionary fund.  That's as blatant a case of bullshit as I've ever seen.  If his family pays for it, fine.  But $60K from the school?  Pfffft...

Ever notice that controversy is Winston's shadow?
