The View from LSU
« on: May 14, 2014, 03:44:24 PM »
Typical LSU take on Auburn:

1) AU never has a good team, but once every four or five years they luck into a good player and have a winning record.   Right.  Over the last 10 years Auburn is 92-37, LSU 104 - 27.  That includes two really bad seasons when an AU coach went down in flames.   Last five years AU is 45-12, LSU 51-13. Last 20, AU is 168-82, LSU 180-71.  Pretty similar.

2) Auburn will suck because it has a safety playing quarterback, no running back, lost its best offensive lineman and doesn't have a punt returner.  LSU will be awesome because they have to replace their top two running backs, top three receivers, their fullback, the best QB they've had in 30 years,  their best OL, a pair of defensive tackles and a starting safety.

3) Les is the best coach in the SEC, Gus is a flash in the pan.  Les had more players (9) selected in the 2014 NFL draft than any other head coach.  And LSU played in the.... uhhh... crap bowl.  Who even remembers?   Had nine players drafted in 2013, five in 2012.. you get the drift.

Head to head I admit LSU has Auburn's number since Tuberville left.  But overall, they're not the end all of college football.  They're a fringe team in my opinion.  They remind me a lot of us when we had Tuberville. Usually on the bubble, but not often a factor.   They made the NC game only on a bizarre fluke with two losses and flopped in a rematch against Alabama in 2011 and against UGA in the SEC-CG in 2005.

They may win the West this season, but there's nothing about their roster or schedule that screams lock.

Where is this coming from? Obviously a specific conversation you had.

In regards to 1, I find that teams outside of the SEC are of similar belief, but not necessarily LSU fans.

To your second point, I haven't heard anyone say we'll suck next year. To the contrary. But they DO seem to be overly confident in their own team despite completely rebuilding. Similar situation to Bama right now. They're basically starting over from scratch, but they don't seem to realize it.

Your third point is the one I have to flat-out disagree with. Most LSU fans hate Les. They at least acknowledge that he's a weirdo and has fallen ass-backwards into most of his success. I'm usually the one having to say "Hey, don't be so down on the guy, he's won you guys a lot of games." To a fault, if you ask them their opinion on the man, it will usually take them about two minutes to pine over how badly they wish they still had Saban.

Golf with a gaggle of LSU fans.   Just listening to general conversation over 18 holes.

They may hate Les, but wouldn't trade him for "one trick" Gus.

The ones I was around think we will absolutely suck because we have occasional fluke seasons and are barely .500 the rest of the time.  We're MSU/Ole Miss/Arky level in their minds.  They figure the SEC-W is down to them and Alabama and we'll be fighting for fourth or fifth.

I'm going to call semi-bullshit on this one.  I probably am around more LSU grads on a daily basis than anyone else on here with the exception of the Twitter Warrior.  I have never heard any of them speak like this about Auburn and they certainly don't see us as an Ole Miss or MSU once a decade flash in the pan. I think most of them see us as the closest thing they have to an actual rival, tho not the bitter nasty bammer kind.  They were sympathetic to the Chizik train wreck, having been through that same scenario more than once themselves (DiNardo comes to mind).  They are seriously respectful of Gus and yes, most of them think Les is a fuckup but as long as he keeps winning, he stays.

And they despise Sabinz and bammer.  I don't hear a lot of "wish we still had Sabinz" from the ones I hang out with; I find that folks from Louisiana are a "let the past float down the bayou" kind of people - life goes on and let's have another drink to toast the future.

Your mileage may vary but I have a ton of co-workers in my random sampling here - not just my corndog baby daddy and his LSU friends, one of whom is a big money booster and has his ear to the ground in Red Stick.  Contrary to popular opinion on here, I like LSU fans and have never had a bad experience there that was any worse than what you would get anywhere from opposing fans.  Drunk idiots are everywhere.

Need I remind you that you do not live in Alabama?

Need I remind you that people who live in Alabama have a different perspective than even those who live in Louisiana and/or Texas because they aren't exposed to WJOX, Finebaum, WNSP, al.com and all the influences that shape perspective here?

Need I remind you that what they say to your face is often vastly different from what they may say to each other?

Need I remind you that there is at times a significant difference between "grads" and "fans"?

I really don't care who or what you call, whether it be Ghostbusters or 1800Steamer.  I can only refer to what I heard when I was in a group of five LSU fans, two bammers and me the lone true Tiger.  FWIW my best friend is an LSU fan and we just don't talk about it.  Get along better that way.

There is a grand-canyon sized chasm between the "average" LSU fan you actually meet and converse with (at least in this city) and the drunk coonasses you run into at the games. At least their home games.

I can totally see how going to Baton Rouge for a game without being with corndog friends could make for an unpleasant experience.

Off the top of my head, there was the girl in a football jersey & eyeblack  who mockingly scratched her crotch yelled at my wife "Oooh, classy bitches in dresses!" and then spit at her feet. There was the guys in 2011 who kept screaming "Scam Newton!" I recall one of those goons saying "How cute! I remember my first National Championship!" To which I quickly retorted "I remember my 3rd undefeated season." (They have zero). I remember last year when the Auburn band was playing, I think ABC by Jackson 5, and some drunk coonass screaming at our group "MICHAEL JACKSON'S A FAG!!!"

From a stranger at a bar in NOLA, or around the office, or a friend-of-a-friend at a party? Nothing but respect for Auburn. Playful ribbing is about as rough as they get.

Don't know about Kaos' experience or the general perception LSU fan has about AU.  But my perspective on LSU fan is they are some of the best...but absolutely the worst fans in the conference.  I've been to some awesome tailgates both in AU and the Stick at LSU games.  Great fans.  Good times.

Then, I've also witnessed more incidents of just downright WTF behavior from them than any other fan base.  Some of these peeps need a big dump left in the bed of their trucks.

One year in JHS, I had seats in the end zone close to the LSU section.  LSU scored a TD and I looked down to see the LSU cheerleaders, both guys and girls, X-ing us out.  The D-Generation X out.  If you don't like it, I got two words for ya'....SUCK IT!

I was in law school at the time and one of the guys in a class was an ex LSU cheerleader.  I told him, "Your female cheerleaders X'd me out."  He just smiled and said, "Yeah.  So?"

What does living in AL or not living in AL got to do with LSU people?  LSU isn't in AL. LSU people in AL are no different than LSU people in TX. And I said grads, but I would correct that to fans as well. It's the oil patch, and there are quite a few non-grad fans as well.

You are saying that the pervasive shit from the media in the state of AL permeates members of any fan base that resides within listening distance?  That a Vandy fan would be trash talking Auburn like a bammer after a diet of JOX and Finescum?

Ridiculous.  One experience and one LSU friend doesn't give you the platform to speak for all LSU fans. And I would guess the reason you and he don't speak about football is less him and more you.  As with nearly any story you tell, I am going to chalk part of it up to hyperbole and part up to rampant paranoia.

It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."
