Former Auburn running back Ben Tate offered the MMQB an interesting revelation about his football career.
If he were given the chance to do it all over again, Tate would have switched to safety during his time at Auburn.
"I had the opportunity to play it in college, but I wanted to be the guy to get the ball," Tate said. "I had no idea the position would be devalued."
Tate, who just signed a two-year, $6.1 million contract with the Cleveland Browns after four years serving as arguably the NFL's most capable backup in Houston, was speaking to the larger issue of running backs becoming less and less valuable in the professional ranks.
One of the top backs on the free-agent market, Tate's compensation paled in comparison to other positions, like safety, where Jairus Byrd signed a six-year, $56 million deal in New Orleans, former Browns starter T.J. Ward landed a four-year $22.5 million deal and several other starters landed big numbers to essentially play the same role -- starter -- that Tate was signed to play in Cleveland.
